Ideal Tune (max power w/o need for downpipes)

Hey everyone, new here...been trolling for awhile...live in Miami, FL...have an f90 m5c that I purchased a little over a year ago. Just crossed 4,000 miles, and looking to add a tune or piggy. I know this topic has been addressed at nauseam, but basically I'm looking for more power without needing to add downpipes; willing to play with fuel (have an E85 fuel station about five miles away), and don't want to stress if I have a flat tire and need to go to the dealer, to have to rush to uninstall a bunch of cables (unless unplugging a JB4 is relatively easy)? Any thoughts?

I would just do a piggy if you want a little more power and no headaches.

Ran piggys on 2 different F10 M5's with zero issues .. I've not done it on my current M5C but likely my next mod.

Coral Gables here btw.

Is your first name Jose? Mine too...What part of the Gables do you live in, I live in Gables by the Sea...do you if the JB4 cables have to cross into the car? How complicated is it to install? Heard of some cases where cables plugged incorrectly leading to a CEL...I guess other option would be a Racechip? Easier to install, but less flexible in terms of power?

Hahaha .. yup Jose here as well.

I live by Riviera CC off of Blue Road .. will need to check out your car at some point.

JB4 provides more options and more logging capability and many on this forum run it. I like the simplicity of a plug and play piggy but really a personal choice.

Installed both piggys in 10 min .. relatively easy DIY.

Pic of my car.

Nice wheels! Almost bought a black on black, but went white instead. Like the contrast with the carbon roof. Agree, need to arrange a meet, especially if any others in Miami area

Jose, if you're interested in tag teaming on an install, send me an IM and we can plan it. Granted I'm the rookie on this type of DIY. I previously tuned an AMG with renntech, and given their reputation/experience, I had felt really comfortable. Had a great experience!

This is very debatable but if you want something that the dealer can't physically see, then go with a piggy.

Just know that if something goes wrong, be prepared to pay or argue back and fourth. If you mod your car on any way, you are responsible for the damages.

I don't ever roll into the dealership if something is wrong with my car. Oil change is all I get and tires mounted.

I'm considering BM3 stage 1, it doesn't require downpipes.

Think you have some good long straightaways in Broward! I've purchased a Dragy, but having trouble finding where to use it

Do you feel the difference? I read with RC it's really only felt in upper end of the range?

That makes sense, will need a good, trustworthy mechanic in Miami if anything goes wrong as a plan B; hopefully won't need one though!

Hey @bmwtrs I had the same thoughts. Since I’m still in warranty I figured, just a simple piggy back. I’ve read that with just a piggy back if something goes wrong with the car it’s less detectable than a tune. But others have said they can still see if the engine was played with due to boost bring raised etc, but harder to prove. In the end if it all atm I decided to go the piggy way.

I had the Racechip for 2 weeks and you can definitely feel the power. So easy to install, 15 mins and to me power was felt up 60-100 and a linear pull. I switched to the jb4 because I got a killer deal and the jb4 has 5+ maps you can switch to on a fly (increased boost with higher octane fuel), even a custom map, and you can log it all on your phone.

I ran map 1 and it’s very similar to the Racechip at their max map. Now if you want to run map 2 and beyond, you have to remove the turbo inlet on the driver side to plug in the ewg. If you have some wrenching knowledge it’s pretty straightforward. There’s also good instructions on it. You also have to poke a whole through the firewall to run the OBD wire so you can log and see how the car is doing. Also to be able to switch maps via your phone buy the Bluetooth connect. The total install was about an hour.

Pros: Definitely hits harder and can feel the boost in map 2 over map 1 and Racechip. Also the power unlike map 1 and Racechip can be felt north of 100mph and keeps pulling. This is just map 2 sheesh. Just like you I have Dragy and been trying to find roads that let me test 60-130 mph times.

Cons: Definitely will be a pain to uninstall and install again if you want to take it to the dealer in stock form. Also, because I have an 2018 I feel the transmission cannot keep up with the tune or power feels slow in map 2. Map 1 and Racechip seemed to match better, the tune and the transmission. I may have to get the transmission flash.

Summary if you want decent power and not trying to race 600+ hp cars on a daily and easy install to racechip or if you find a used one similar to price get a jb4 and just do the stage 1 until you’re ready to run map 2+ and have to install the ewg wires.

Or if you want super easy just buy Racechip. Hope this post helps. Feel free to ask any other questions. I also have pics of the install.

I've read that with just a piggy back if something goes wrong with the car it's less detectable than a tune.

I ran map 1 and it's very similar to the Racechip at their max map. Now if you want to run map 2 and beyond, you have to remove the turbo inlet on the driver side to plug in the ewg. If you have some wrenching knowledge it's pretty straightforward. There's also good instructions on it. You also have to poke a whole through the firewall to run the OBD wire so you can log and see how the car is doing. Also to be able to switch maps via your phone buy the Bluetooth connect. The total install was about an hour.

Man, super helpful post. Appreciate all the background. Definitely leaning towards the Racechip. Seems easy to deal with and it's a nice gain, until, of course, the turbo hayabusa effect kicks in, but we'll see...as for good roads, seems there's a group down here that routinely goes to PBIR, let's see if that helps solve it, as least down here...want to get the Dragy working

Installed both piggys in 10 min .. relatively easy DIY.
