So my Dad has a 2020 G06 40 M Sport. I have a G05 40 X Line.

In Sport plus mode for both trucks, his is much louder, has a deeper/more aggressive sound, and shifts harder.

Is that to be expected? I was under the impression M Sport package was mostly cosmetic, but is the engine tuned differently?

M Sport package in Canada includes cosmetics (external plus M Sport Steering Wheel), M Sport Brakes, M Sport Exhaust, and Adaptive M Suspension. I always get confused what M Sport package includes and doesn't include in US, but it is at least possible that his G06 also includes M Sport Exhaust. That would certainly explain the difference in sound and nothing to do with G05/G06 differences.

There are no differences in engine tuning, but there is a lot of margin in these B58 motors on x40i and differences could be explained by that variance, difference in fuel, learned engine management, maybe ambient air pressure on the day of the test (if driver action is ruled out, like putting the car into Sport Shift mode).

My M Sport includes "Sport automatic transmission" option 2TB, but I don't know if that is standard or also part of the Canadian M Sport package.

If you do a VIN decode, M Sport Exhaust is option 1MA, M Sport Brakes is 2NH, and Adaptive M Suspension is 2VF.

Was the difference in sounds from inside or outside? Remember they both get sounds pipped in through the speakers to make them sound cooler.....

I don't have a MY20 pricing guide but for MY21 the MSport exhaust is included with the MSport package for the X6. It probably was for MY20 also so that is the difference you hear.

G06 with MSport package. I just checked my window sticker and it says "MSport exhaust system - included"

I tried Sport Plus mode (but didnt push her hard) and did notice the exhaust sound became very aggressive in a way that makes me feel good. I have acoustic glass and I was still able to hear the exhaust sound with all four windows shut. I don't have a G05 so cant compare.

thanks all--makes sense. I've driven them both quite a bit and it's definitely the exhaust, not sound being pumped through the speakers.

Makes sense about the M Sport exhaust, must be that. It definitely makes a big difference!!

You might be surprised by what is actually piped in vs what's coming from the exhaust. If you disable ASD with Bimmercode you will hear hardly anything, even in sport plus with the M Sport exhaust.
