3 year old and a baby vs. Leather: which leather?

I am looking at a coffee interior. If I get Merino extended leather, am I just asking for trouble by having a 3 year old and an infant in the car? The infant should be fine now, but he will grow...

If anyone has experience, please weigh in!

You will be fine. Merino is the best. You won’t have any issues providing you spot clean it when you have issues. This is true with any grade of leather. I have merino ivory white leather and it’s still looks and smells new after two very long family road trips with my kids 9yr and 11yr. I also don’t let my kids drink anything but clear liquids in the car (ever).

merino leather truly is the best and softest they have. in the f15 we had the nappa leather which is good, but not as good as merino. if you're disciplined enough, you can maintain anything, so don't sell yourself short on the much tougher, other leathers.

I have a 5 year old and a 10 month old - opted for the Merino. If you think about it, it's their child car seats that take the bulk of the beating, so the leather is OK. I got a good car seat pad to put under the seats and haven't given it a second thought.

Thanks guys! That makes me feel a lot better! Hopefully the care regime isn’t overly onerous, since free time is limited with two little kids. My detailer may be getting extra visits!

My salesman who is a long time owner and M Sales award winner for the last 5 yrs recommended Vernasca over Merino for endurance. I was going to go Vernasca anyway since I don’t like the pattern in Merino but it was reassuring to hear it was more durable. I have a two year old and 4 month old.

Plastic covers like your grandma had on her couches?
But seriously almost any color with a good ceramic coating, keep it well maintained too. Best of luck

Thumbs up Great question!

I really appreciate this question as I'm dealing with the same type of question.

My issue with kids in my car, is that I can't stop them from spilling, dirty shoes, and the ever-scary random marker they sneak into the car. Is there any noticable difference in "ease of cleaning" between Vernasca leather vs Merino? Does one hold up better than the other?

I've always been more concerned with leaving "dents" in the leather from the carseat..... than the "mess" created.

Pick up a car seat protector. Problem solved

Which protector do you use? I am afriad the car seat will damage the seat (leather)

I have a 4yr old and a 1yr old. Haven't picked up my car due to Covid-19. Try to see what option I have to protect the seat. I have ordered Cognac Vernasca

This is spot on about the dents or stretching.

One reason leather is popular is because it is pretty durable. We tend to forget that. You will be fine. Pick your favorite.

Honestly, it was before my car even arrived, so I don't remember. Just search.eBay or Amazon for car seat protector. Hundreds to choose from.

This is what I went with. The brown matches the coffee interior perfectly. I'm very happy with them so far.

We have merino and a 2 year old.

+1 for the car seat protector. I would also add a kick mat for the front seat, my 2 year old loves leaving shoe prints on the back of the front seat so the kick mat is great.

I don't let her eat in either of my cars, and she can only drink milk or water.

Ok, so the Merino wins with seat protectors. Are the BMW branded ones any better than Dione or Britax branded protectors? I’d like something that fits the seats well and doesn’t bleed dye to the seats...
Thanks!

Makes sure they are the thicker/padded ones. You don’t want a thin piece of plastic.

I'm using the Diono Ultra Mat with that combo. It's been fine for the first week and worked in my X3 with Vernasca for 3 years.

The only drawback is the piece that tucks between the seats to hold it in place is sewn on at the fold between the bottom and back and on the X5 that's not where the seats actually fold. It's about 2 inches higher up the seat, so it does take a little finagling to get everything in place and still be able to use the seat belt buckle.

But every mat I've used has been like that, so I'm not sure if there's actually one out there with that piece sewn two inches up the back portion that would work better.

When we have our 4 year old grandson he loves to kick the back of the passenger seat. He is very tall for his age so the seat protector under the car seat and kick mat work great. My wife uses our X5 to travel for her job. I also use the seat protector in the passenger seat when she needs her travel work desk. My wife is very hard on cars as well! No issues with either of them so far!

For car seat, I got the Diono Ultra Mat (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00BFQ5BM0/...UTF8&psc=1)

For kick mat, I got Stow ‘n Go (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B005PK1E00/...UTF8&psc=1)

Both work pretty good

Thanks.

I read the review for this product and people mentioned the color of the protector might stain the leather seat. Does that happen to you? Do you have a light color leather seat?

I have Congac by the way.

Did you try to remove the protector and see if it stains the seat under and causes indentation? I read review and some mentioned this protector is going to stain lighter leather seat.
