Just 60 pounds difference between 535i and 335i
I was just checking the specs and I saw the weight difference between 535i and 335i is just 60 pounds. No wonder 5 series gets almost the same mileage. I cant believe that e90 got so heavy

its that flight simulator joystick (shifter) the 5-series has that weighs it down.

wow. that is amazing. i didn't look at the gearing (for the manual transmission cars), but the 335 is 2/10ths faster to 60, but the gas mileage is identical!!! for the same price of a new 335, it almost makes more sense to buy a year old CPO 535 (for those of us who need more room!) my only issue is that the 5 series will be undergoing a major redesign very shortly... but yes, the 3 series has gotten WAY too heavy recently....

The 535i uses a lot more lightweight material than the 335i. (The $$$$ are definitely going somewhere!) It saves weight but the downside is it's fragile and expensive to fix after a crash. There are some interesting threads about 5-series collision repair costs at other BMW websites.

I rode in an associates 5 series sedan while out of town and did not find it had a lot more noticeable interior volume than our 335i Coupe?

But it's safe to assume that the 335i is a more nimble, better handling car than the larger 535i...
I've not driven a N54 powered E60, but my buddy has a nice '04 530i. It's a great freeway car, tons of room and very comfortable, but it's in no way as sharp handling as my 335. |

When I was looking at the specs trying to decide between a 535 and a 335, I only saw a few (something like two) inches of difference between interior space. It didn't seem worth the extra $$$.

Speaking of which, it would be nice if BMW would add a lightweight model to the lineup. A lightweight 3 would be great. But any lightweight model would be nice to see. I feel dumb asking, but is the Z2 M still on the horizon?

All cars are getting heavier across the board...
The fact that the 5 is only 60lbs heavier than the 3 means that BMW spent more time and money on designing the 5 to loose weight. (Basically everything forward of the A pillar in the 5 is aluminum) IMO - with the weights of every car on the rise, the 3 is about where it should be (give or take a bit) but its the 5 that is lighter than it should be. |

Yeah I noticed that too. More of the space is in the rear-legroom and the huge trunk. The front seats are huge too which takes up a lot of space.

I test drove a 535xi before I got my 335xi
The 535xi felt like a boat, I am sure the suspension set up is a lot softer on the 5.

If you are comparing both models to their respective transmission. An automatic 535i is 122lbs heavier than a e92 6at 335i. The closest would be the 535i manual and the e90 335i manual which the 535i is 66lbs heavier.
The auto is significantly heavier for the 5 series for some reason. And most 5 series are auto. |

The seats in the 5 are more comfortable and the car feels a lot more refined. Like Akhter said, there is more leg room in the back and the trunk is a lot bigger, and the trunk lid pops open all the way. Handling wise the 3 is a lot sharper but that is by design, to differentiate it from the 5 becasue they are intended for different markets. Comparing the two is like comparing jeans with dress pants.

I totally agree about the HUD option. That, Comfort Seats and a Rear Backup Camera are the only options I miss on the E90 LCI..... |
