Driving with tailgate partially open?

Hey All...

Need to bringing a 9ft box from Lowe's home. Are there any issues with driving the the bottom 1/2 down and the top partially open (tied down in place)? I now there was no issues on my e70, but wasn't sure with all the new electronics safety "stuff" if there would be issues or break something. I checked the manual and couldn't find anything.

Thanks!
~ Mark

Nope - moved a number of things now with both tailgates open but tied together. Note the space isn't the same all the way back - not only do the seats not lie flat, the roof space narrows too.

There is a danger of driving with the tailgate open that you will draw carbon monoxide into the car. This danger is not BMW-specific. You can mitigate this danger by keeping the front windows open a bit so there is airflow from front to back.

Anyone have pics with a good tie-down structure for this setup. I assume:

a) lower lift-gate all the way down;
b) upper lift-gate manually lowered as far as possible;
c) bounce/impact insulation (mover blanket, foam, etc.) between lower lift-gate, long load, and upper lift-gate; and
f) sturdy low-stretch rope (NOT bungees) through the single upper lift-gate lock loop to two inside rear side floor tie downs (and NOT the two lower lift-gate lock loops).

Correct?

Not sure there is a "right" answer.
I think it depends on how far out it sticks in part. I did actually loop through the lower tailgate as well each time. I felt it stopped the top gate bouncing around more, and stopped the load moving around. Probably overkill but given some things were quite heavy, felt better to err on the side of caution!
