Grrrrrr

I just moved into a new townhouse where someone has a cat that they let run around the complex. This cat has taken a liking to the hood of my car! This morning I found a 5-6 inch scratch across the hood! I can tell you it pissed me off. I am 99% certain it was the cat as there are paw prints all over the hood and I have never seen a scratch on the hood prior to this morning.

The cat also seems to like the seat of my motorcycle as well, although no damage there.

Anyone know the laws around this issue? Anyone have any experience with this?

BTW, I live in the San Francisco area....

Thanks

shame i dont have the link to the video where the cat was nose'n around the sun roof ... and it closed and chopped it's head off < car commercial.

anyways pets should be controlled by their owners and not left un managed...
Catch the cat and turn it in to an animal shelter.

btw similar thing happened with one of my cars cat prints all over it every morning.
I just kept yelling at it and throwing things at it.... dont remember the outcome.

good luck

take pics of the car, along with the paw prints, and take it to the owner and tell him:

a) put your cat on a leash
b) demand a payment to fix your car

as you can tell, I'm not a big fan of vehicle vandalism by pets

I would reintroduce the cat back into the wild about 20 miles away!

My neighbor's cat used to like my car. Until I used this:

Now the cat sits on the car across the street instead of mine.....

Why don't you pee on your car to let the cat know it belongs to you?
You are a "greater threat" if the cat knows it is your "territory".

Shoot the cat with a BB/Pellet gun.

Call Animal Control to come and pick up the cat. Or turn it in to an Animal Shelter.

Lock the cat in a cage outside your front door chained to something with a note saying that "I have taken this cat ransom. It will cost the owner the cost of repairing the scratches on my car. Cash and Check accepted."

Then call the news. That would be hilarious.

Shake-Away Domestic Cat Powder uses this same effective strategy. It contains the scent (urine) of a predator much more dominant than the cat (fox & coyote). By introducing the scent of a "predator", you send a forceful message to the offending cat(s).

wouldn't that attract coyote ?

It could be, although I have seen this cat multiple times around the complex. Paw prints definetly look feline to my untrained eye...

Ordered the cat repellant...

As much as I would like to take some of the other suggestions to permanently remove/relocate the cat (I HATE cats) I am a pet owner (dog of course) and know how devastating it would be to loose one. I wish I could "accidentally" let my German Shepherd get after the cat, it would probably just use my car to get away!

I have an outdoor cat (that is my cat) who sleeps on the hood of my new 335i and other cars I've had without any issues of scratches (yes, she has her claws). Living in a rural area, I do have raccoons that visit the cat's water bowl every night on my deck and the paw prints are almost identical to a cat. Granted I would be surprised to see a raccoon on the hood of a car.

My suggestion is to find some sort of repellant that will not injure or kill the cat. I don't know what the laws are in San Fran however there are likely no leash laws for cats. Also causing any harm to the animal could come back to bite you (no pun) now that you've aired your grievance on the web (where anything could be traced). If nothing else, buy a car cover however that might entice the cat to sleep on your car more often!

If you can get a picture of their cat on your car, then you would definitely have proof to show the owner it was theirs.
