C&D April Spy Shots shows i4 will look more like a 3 series than the concept did

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...-bmw-i4-spied/
  • We spied the upcoming 2021 BMW i4 electric sedan testing its charging capabilities.
  • Now that the wild-looking concept has made its transition into reality, we can see that it'll look more like the 3-series on which it's based.
  • The i4 will be equipped with a roughly 80.0-kWh battery pack and a 530-hp electric motor on the rear axle that will help it reach its EPA-estimated a range of 270 miles.

no surprise there, legacy OEMs have always had wildly absurd concepts to get people hyped up and then comes out with the most cost effective dumb down styling that doesn't offend anyone.

in this early day of BEV adoption i'd say styling isn't a big factor at all given how the model 3 looks(not good), as long as it has a normal car shape people will accept it.

I'm more interested in how the interior will look. I thought the i4 concept interior was beautiful

I'm not getting the wide disparity of ranges from WLPT vs. EPA.

EPA rates the Tesla Model 3 LR model 3 at 322 miles. WLPT rates it at 560KM (347 miles) for a 25 mile difference.

https://www.tesla.com/en_AU/support/...calculator-ref

How is it that C&D says the 373 mile range listed by BMW will likely be 270 miles (103 miles less than advertised)?

Also, it's my understanding that EPA tests at higher speeds which actually produces less range overall with EV's while WLPT tests with shorter trips and less high speed running?

I can't make sense out of or reconcile the range differences between the two. Based on the difference between the Model 3 @ 347 miles (WLPT) and 322 miles EPA....the i4 @ 373 mile (WLPT) the EPA difference should not be more than 30 miles less range.

I feel like I am on an anti car and driver binge here but they have been a mess lately with details. They are wrong on this, I would just ignore them

Literally yesterday they posted a pic on Twitter of the leaked 1 series sedan LCI, which has been affirmatively identified almost a week ago and called it the new 2 series coupe.

C+D is barely a notch a above click bait, not doing any journalism anymore, sad

Agreed. It's more about what headlines they can put out there that will garner the most clicks. As fast as they put up the article about the 2er Coupe, they still haven't edited the article at all even after it's been pretty much confirmed that it is not the 2er Coupe.

Also, if you navigate the New Cars subsection of the page and go to the BMW section, read what they wrote as an intro to it. Reads more of an opinion/blog style than an actual legitimate publication:

Quote:
Forget what you think you know about BMW being the "Ultimate Driving Machine" brand—those days are fading fast. The automaker has lost its way in recent years, prioritizing luxury and in-car technology versus satisfying driving characteristics and cars that communicate road feel and handling nuance to their drivers. Sure, if you look hard enough, you can find BMWs that live up to the hype—we're looking at you, 2-series and M2—but something clearly is amiss when the brand's X3 and X5 SUVs drive better than some of its cars, and the once benchmark 3-series sports sedan no longer leads its segment.

Based on The upcoming 4er Gran Coupe would be far more accurate.

Right? Scott are you able to confirm if the new 4er Gran Coupe has the same flat door handles as the i4 pictured here? Or will it be the normal handle like the g20 currently has? Sort of hoping for the normal handles but I can let that slide I guess lol

The Gran Coupe has the same recessed lift-up handles as the i4.

According to this article the i4 will go on sale sometime in 2021. But another post here says it won't hit the market until 2022...

What do you all think?

That test mule doesn't even look like the i4. BMW stated 85% of what we see in the concept will carry over to the production model. The rear end is completely different as is the side panel. Hood and grille is wrong also.

I searched pictures of the i4 concept in a separate window (with the same angle shots of the C&D pictures and switched back and forth between them and nothing lines up).

I'm thinking it is like a electrified 3 series car or some other test mule. Wouldn't be the first time C&D got something completely wrong.
