base stereo upgrade - All Morel! Need dsp/amp help
Hoping for a little help from the experts on DSP and amps for this new setup.
If you had these speakers, how would you power? Vehicle: 2010 335i e90, Base stereo (no tweeters) with CiC iDrive (AUX,BT, NAV, PDC) Speakers: - Morel Intergra Ovation X04, 4" coaxial with external MX22 Xover RMS: 80 watts each, 4ohm, Freq.Resp: 60-25,000 Hz (Qty:3)-Morel Hybrid Ovation II, 4" mids, external MX22e (bi-amp capable) Xover RMS: 130 watts each, 4ohm, Freq.Resp: 60-25,000 Hz (Qty:2)- Morel MT23 tweeters RMS: 130 watts each, 6ohm, Freq.Resp: 1400-25000Hz (Qty:2)Goal: I was pretty happy with my Logic7 system in my 2007 e90, but this 2010 Base sysem is horrible and I'm looking to upgrade for rock/pop/R&B self-enjoyment. Competition level SQ not needed or budgeted. Open questions:

MS-8 is a dinosaur now and it came with some problems
The self calibration was always an issue with getting what you wanted out or it plus the low power. Helix Audio tech has some fine DSP/AMPs 8 channels of decent to great power usually in the better models. and there DSP is well supported and ahead of the rest. No need to get separate DSP's and Amps these days. (unless you are going real high end) Mosconi has some . JL has some. Lot's of other's have some 8 channels dsp decent power is common now. No need to use coaxials in the front door the BMW tweeter pods are cheap. If you are in Portland you should vist https://musicarnw.com/ Noted to be the best high end BMW stereo shop on the West Coast. Or was that some other Portland not in Oregon. It would be worth going by there just for the knowledge. Say's there open I bought a kit from them Morel dotechs, Jehenert xe-200's and Jl Xd 600/6 best car stereo sound I have ever had. I would suggest Jehnert xe 200's for the underseats but they may not be obtainable in the US anymore. I'm sure the Musicar will have a good substitute. You should talk to them (MusicarNW)about not spending much on rear speakers. As they say rear speakers are a communist plot. https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/ Last edited by ctuna; 04-27-2020 at 04:18 PM.. |

Similar to what ctuna posted:
You want the best imaging in your front stage. I would put the Morel Hybrid Ovation II, 4" mids in the front stock door location and the MT23 tweeters in the A-Pillar tweeter sail location. If you go passive, use the MX22e for the front stage and consider just disconnecting the center speaker. Do you have rear pillar speakers? If you do and want to use them for rear fill or effects, make sure and account for additional DSP and amp channels. Put the Morel Intergra Ovation X04, 4" coaxial with external MX22 Xover in the rear doors. I would re-consider a trunk sub. Musicar Northwest makes a slick OE style corner loaded enclosure that sounds very good. They did two BMW’s for me. The E92 used a JL Audio Twk 88 DSP and a couple JL Audio XD series amplifiers. JL Audio also has a VXi line with a slightly more advanced DSP and the amplifier channels combined in the same case. They used a Helix Ultra DSP for my X6, a much higher end system with virtual channels, RealCenter and other features that allow a two-seat tune utilizing the center channel as well as the traditional driver seat tune. The Morels with upgraded decent under-seat woofers, a corner loaded subwoofer, adequate DSP/ power and tuned correctly is going to sound amazing. |

Thanks for the recommendations. I actually live 15 mins from Musicar, so looks like l'm lucky to have such a good resource close by. I sent them an email to work out a plan. I'll post an update here and let you all know what I end up with. |

I would call them or drop by .
Sometimes they are quite busy . I am pretty sure they will tell you a center speaker is another communist plot. |

I would use an audio control DM-608 DSP, grab a full range signal, or just the front signal, you have 8 outputs. You can use ch 1-2 to control the front, 3-4 for rear doors, 5-6 for underseat subs, 7-8 for a trunk woofer if needed. Or you can add another channel of speakers in the rear door. From there you can choose whichever amps to power the door speakers, underseats, and subwoofer.
That's where I started on my x5d with base audio and it sounds lovely. Except I have the DM-810 which has 10 channels to play with... ch1-6 are front/center channel, rear doors, and d-pillars, then 7-8 underseat woofers, 9-10 subwoofer. The DSP ties everything together and gives you lots and lots of control
