I-Drive - come on BMW

I have had a number of nits with my car that I figured I'd get taken care of when I got a nail in my rear tire. Classic BMW came to my home to drop off a brand new X5 and pick up the M. All done contactless over email - super easy. Issues to fix:

- Middle button on iDrive sticks - it is super grabby
- Rattle in B pillar
- Rattle in sunroof
- Back up camera contrast and brightness doesn't work
- Said tire with nail

SA calls me and says, are you sure you didn't spill anything before we take the I-Drive off; I categorically say no - I don't even drink coffee in my car.

Get a call today from the Dealer saying they found "something" behind the controller and BMW will NOT cover the $1300 change under warranty. I told the dealer to put my old controller back in and tell BMW to go take a flying f***!

Manager is taking another pass to see if they can get the claim approved. Super frustrating but minor in the grand scheme of life.

Update on the situation. BMW is refusing to budge. Service advisor did screw up and authorized the replacement without me explicitly giving approval. He is a straight up guy and I don't want him to get screwed so I agreed to pay for the part and labor. Will take it up with BMW on the side and see what happens.

Sorry to read about this.

Here is my take on this.

Engineering? Really, you design a user interface in a CAR that is used in the elements, rain, snow, wind, etc, and you cannot design it to be weather tight? Audi has the same issue as I am sure they all do. The big flat display in the A8 (a/c controls and such) is a perfect place to spill a little of ANYTHING on an kill it. I was always super cautions of this after reading of others having this happen. Another great design in the Audi's is the disappearing screen, valets have put the keys up on the dash only to have the keys disappear into the dash along with the disappearing display. Dumb design.

Here is the solution.

Every person go out and test drive a BMW or an Audi or your pick, and spill something.....they will get their heads out of their asses and eliminate this issue.

My Cameras are weather tight. Your iPhone is weather tight. My watch is weather tight. etc etc. You must engineer the device to be fully functional in its intended work environment. Otherwise remove the cup holders Frantz.

Let me guess, your dealer is a Sonic dealer? They pull this crap every time you take your car in. They find a way to say that something isn't covered by warranty. EVERY TIME! And its usually $1000 to fix.

I think it probably has a lot to do with the specific dealership and their Service Department.

I'm on my 5th M5 and have had a lot replaced under warranty with no issues ... dealership has always been happy to help.

I can see it now, they replace the unit, then BMW says "Send it to us" and they then determine in Germany that you spilled a Latte on it and damaged it. Right. Dealer is just being lame.

Classic BMW in Dallas; they are usually not this lame and haven't pulled a similar move in my past 10 years of dealing with them. If we weren't going through a freaking pandemic, I would be more forceful and talk face to face but the current situation just sucks. Hopefully get my car back tomorrow, be out $1,300 and then start the conversation with BMW. It is a freaking lease payment I'll be out.

Given your SA screwed up and went ahead and did the replacement, they should have given you a discounted price on the part and labor. The markup on both of those is very high.

Classic is an independent dealer...no affiliation to Sonic.

If you continue to have trouble with Classic, I'd recommend BMW of Grapevine (Sewell dealership)...they are a family owned dealership and are very good at customer service. We currently have 3 cars from Sewell and have purchased another 8 or so from them in previous years. I prefer using them even if another dealership may be closer to me.

Agree; I love Sewell. Hands down the best dealer I have worked with. I purchased my wife's X5 from them. For servicing, it is a huge PIA to do the drive or have someone come and drive the car as I live in Allen. Plus i had a nail on the rear tire with a slow leak so didn't want the car driven a long distance.

I am sorry to keep this thread going but wanted let folks know about the latest status:

- Got my car back yesterday; during the repair they damaged my left rear tire - got a nail on the shop floor. Fixed. They wanted to charge me labor but I told them to take a flying $%^&

-They did not fix the B pillar rattle; could not replicate but as soon as I got in the car I could hear it

- They "fixed" the sunroof but within 5 minutes of driving the rattle was back. I loved the fact that they noted in the work ticket "to inform the customer that this is a high performance sports sedans and occasional rattles are normal"

- Opened a case with BMW on the i-drive; they passed the buck back to the dealership

Sent my service guy a nice but seriously stern note this morning. I am still out $1,300 and none of my base issues were fixed. I told him I wanted the damaged i-drive controller with proof where the damage was. He responds back saying "sorry we don't have that but we do have some pictures".

Classic BMW is the absolute pits. Their sales was already awful and now their service matches their sales.

Odd - I would have thought they would be able to send the replacement part back. Labour can't ideally be more than an hour to remove center controller can it? I'd then offer up to order a replacement part (online retailers are always cheaper) and the hand then the new unit and say return and refund the part cost. Cover the labour. Headache... yes. Also, get your old unit - eBay it.

If you didn't authorize the work... and they can't produce your old parts....

That's called a $0.00 fix. at least in CA there are very clear laws around this.

I know man. Going to push this and let the process play out. SA had the nerve to ask me to fill out the survey

Told him no till we get a resolution.
