FTP intake

Has anybody got one of these? I kinda want to keep the stock look under the hood and using this intake with the stock air box seemed like a good option vs the obvious upgraded look of the MST intake they just released.

from what i've read there is no point for the air box to turbo pipe. no performance change, no noise change, only wallet change. I'm personally waiting for someone to get the MST intake in that charges less than xhp then probably getting the chargepipe from vrsf (has a built in bung for gauge, meth or whatever access). MST at least gives some nice look while giving sound improvement if not some performance.

Why do you think mst intake gives sound and possible performance gain but the ftp intake wouldn't provide the same benefits?

FTP website says "The system eliminates the OEM soundchamber which results in increased turbo response as well as mid-rangeand top-end power"

I'd be interested in FTO fresh air pipe and charge air pipe if they make one for 2020 M40i. It will remove the air chamber and should give a little more noise

I'm glad you stopped in. I've been wanting to ask you a question about exhaust burble. I see your a bmw tech.

I test drove a 2019 x3 m40i that sounded sick. It cracked and popped and sounded super aggressive. It was a dealership loaner vehicle. It really sold me on getting a m40i.

For whatever reason my 2018 m40i sounds nothing like the car I test drove. No pops, crackles, etc. I can get a couple if I downshift enough to get the rpm to spike to about 6k. But other than that it doesn't ever hardly burble at all. For the most part it has a really smooth sounding decel. Is there anything I can look for or check? Spark plugs? Exhaust valve? Fuel?

I even got a stage1 tune assuming i would atleast have the option to play with the burble setting but nothing really seems to affect the burble.

2018/2019 have essentially the same everything. Occasionally I have driven some M40's that dont seem to pop all that much. It may be due to the I-level the vehicle has but I'm not entirely certain what would cause a 2018/2019 to sound much different.

2020 on the other hand has B58TU and different engine software in regards to the burbles and over run. On the 2020 it doesn't really make any noise unless you're really in the rpms. I drove tons of M40's and even did an extended test drive with a 2019 M40i loaner and of course I loved how it sounded in sport plus. I special ordered my 2020 and was the first delivery at my dealer and at first I was disappointed because it wasn't as expected but i got over it because it's still a sick car and it does still make noise. The logic is just different now. And also increased HP too.

All in all I love my car. Catted Downpipe really gives me the sound that I've been wanting. Now all I have this pesky CEL. Lol

right, but that's the rub. it was the same thing on the 340s, the pipe removes the sound chamber but still no noticeable difference in sound. Reading a couple of those reviews are what soured the deal for me in getting them about 6 months ago. They can market whatever the hell they want, doesn't make it true. So I chose to believe a forum members review of it as opposed to the FTP marketing stuff.

the MST intake has a different box that is more open (though closed in general compared to the burger or AP) which should allow for better sound in addition to the deletion of the resonator. It's similar in changes as the ECS intake compared to stock on my old S4, and it made a moderate sound change, though not as much as a full open element intake (CTS at the time). The truth in the matter is that there are only 1-2 people that have the intake on the x3 and the one guy who posted on FB is not responding to anyone asking questions about it. So until one of us gets one and says for sure what they see in person it's all speculation. If you want to disregard my thoughts, go for it. it's not my money.

I-level is the software of the vehicle designated by year-month-version, ex. 19-11-540
