that is good advice & it doesn't take somebody with the same car to know that.
things you can do to increase your mpg 1 not reving so high as said before (below 3k rpm) 2 using D instead of DS or the Automatic Manual system if your on Auto 3 driving less city and more highway 4 not making unnecessary accelerations 5 accelerating slowly 6 putting the car in neutral when going downhill 7 tire pressure, change oil/filter if your getting 17 and you drive both highway and city at the same proportion, i'd say your just reving too high or making unnecessary accelerations.

I'm getting 22-23. Easy take off's from lights. Maybe one WOT per tank just to let the car know I mean business sometimes, ummmm, I use M mode to shift to slow down getting to a stop and I try to stay at a constant speed whenever possible. My mpg gauge has taught me to drive a lot better.

Here is data from my most recent road trip:
miles 1207.1 gallons 47.9 ave mpg 25.2 best tankful mpg 26.26 worst tankful mpg 25.45 The trip was almost all highway or rural roads. I travel 70-85 mph, faster when passing, faster where I know there are no speed traps. You say you are only getting 17 mpg. Is that with more than one tank of gas? If so it's probably time go get your right foot reprogrammed.

If you pay attention to your mileage (vacuum) gauge, you'll notice how fast your mileage goes down when you press on the accelerator.
Try this experiment - fill up your tank and drive the entire tank acting as if there's an egg between your foot and the accelerator. And back off the gas way before a stop sign or light. That saves gas and brakes. It's not much fun driving like this, but your mileage will improve. I don't recommend driving like that all the time. Why buy a BMW and drive like you are half dead? But it will show you the effects of going easy on the gas. I have a 2008 328i with 6MT and I get 24.5 in mixed driving. But like others have said, the city/highway mix you drive is a huge factor. All cars get better mileage on the highway, but the difference seems to be larger in our cars. Going easy on the throttle will help your mileage whether you drive mostly city or highway. |

It's probably because you don't use punctuation in your posts.

Bah, that is what is annoying me with my 328 as well. My first tank after getting the car was an astounding 14mpg. Since then I've moved up to 16mpg.(100% city) I only have about 2000 miles on the car and aprox. 900 of that was driving down to South Florida and back up during the break at the end of summer. On the highway trip doing around 75-80mph I got 32mpg though!
In the city I: 1) Never break 2500rpm 2) Gently ease on the gas (I think it pisses off the people behind me 3) Coast downhills 4) Coast to stops 5) Keep the air con on one bar for fan speed and 70 degrees 6) Never sit around with the engine just idling. I had to pick my GF up the other day and it was taking her a while. So I rolled the windows down and turned the car off and sat in the 94 degree heat with no air con for 30 minutes. I'm just hoping it really does improve because 16mpg kinda blows.

I've gotten an average of 29mpg on a 100% highway trip using cruise control at around the speed limit, and i've gotten an average of 14.8mpg when stuck in traffic. don't worry about it, it is normal, and totally dependent on your driving conditions/style |

Yes, it seems to be normal that these cars get generally dismal city MPG but fantastic highway MPG. Most of my driving is congested city (Boston), and I usually get about 14-16 MPG. When I go on highway trips, I'm always astounded that I get between 29-31 MPG. On my trips to NYC I average 33 MPG.
