pretty sure no and its because the Michelin tires that BMW M specifies to be used on the X5M doesn't come in the correct size in 22".

Michs 4S come in 22" 285/315, but as you alluded to, the compound could be slightly different. Once my Contis wear out, I plan on running the 4S on my M50i, moving from 275 to 285 up front shouldn't be an issue.

This is probably a stupid (different) question - so flame me as appropriate - how much leeway is there in the relationship between the width of the wheel (e.g. 10.5) vs the width of the tire (e.g. 275 vs 285)?

I think the stock width of the 21” front wheel on the F95 is 10.5 and the stock tire width is 295. Could you put, for example, a tire with a width of 305 on that same wheel or would you have to get a wider wheel (e.g. 11)? I guess my question could go the other way too - could you put a 285 tire on a 10.5 wheel or would you need to go down to a 10 wheel?

I can’t imagine there is much leeway, but I was thinking there may be some without having to actually replace the wheel...maybe not though.

Depends on the tire. Manufacturer will specify rim width range that is compatible with each size tire. Usually a decent range.

Ohh it could be a large difference, you can't play around with the X drive. Do your research before you start switching tires. 285,30 275 30 are very different tires, your aspect ratio is percentage based not a flat number, each axle needs to be with in 1% -2% revs per mile of each other. Your 275 could be 712rp mile while your 285 are 670rp mile. The X will burn its self out, flat out break, constantly think your front wheels are slipping, screw with the handling characteristics. BMW didn't just slap on 275s because it was an arbitrary number and make their own special tire compound with the manufacturer

100%,

My friend was forced to change one of his tires on a road trip and the x drive didn’t survive 40 miles. It went into safety mode and limited everything.
