Thumbs up New BMW turbo 4-cylinder engine confirmed by BMW NA President

Confirmed in this video:

--> http://feedroom.businessweek.com/?sk...a8ca43c3c8c639

(Watch starting 2:15 in)

As Business Week reported, BMW is developing a strong I4 with twin turbos. It will fit well for their products everywhere else, and maybe even in NA if the government and congress have the senses to increase fuel economy. The I4 with turbo will be faster than the straight 6 and also more efficient.

For those who want power: get a Mustang Shelby. BMW was never about straight speed, and BMW knows that the key to future success will never be raw HP.

Twin turbo is the future for BMW - add it to I4, I6, V8 (2 of which already are here), and all the diesel variants; such a product mix will please the widest market, and offer great efficiency and performance.

It certainly will make great business sense to also offer the M sport package in the I4 turbo. If the economy world wide continues its trend, BMW will need all the help to continue making profits.

Twin-turbo 4?!? Damn, I don't think that's every been done before in a production car(someone correct me if I'm wrong).
It would allow for low-lag high-boost applications though. Think of a car like a hypothetical very-low-lag 300 HP Mitsubishi Evo....

They're still pretty vague on the details of "when and if". I think they're waiting to see where oil prices are headed and what the overall market trends will be. It certainly makes sense for the 1 series, but I'm dubious about the 3 and larger cars. They've been through this strategy before, without much success. 4 cylinders and "luxury" have never gone over well in this market. Certainly the twin turbos will give power, but no 4 cylinder will ever have the silky smooth character of that I6.

TT for a 4-cylinder. With just 2 cylinders each, wouldn't you need really high revs to spin the turbo?

No, you just put on smaller easier spooling turbos - same as what they did on the N54. They could do it with 2 tiny turbos or 1 big and 1 small. They did the latter on the x23d engine - sequential turbos. However, the piping is a hell of a lot simpler when the turbos feed dedicated cylinders. I saw a report in CAR a few months ago about this 4 cylinder twin turbo and it looks pretty exciting - they are planning to put it in the tii versions of the 3 series and 1 series which are upcoming. This is a great idea IMO - turbos make *much* more sense from an environmental standpoint as they allow for a smaller lighter engine which makes the same power as a much heavier powerplant. Kudos, BMW.

I'm always amused by how the latest/greatest prevails to much of the audience, as long as it's new and different. Who wants a clunky old I6. The I4, like the V6, is imbalanced. But BMW is not superman, they too will probably end up going mainstream, like MB (V6's for years), Audi (FWD). But as long as the audience wants it, I'm sure BMW will sell a 314 sedan with a CVT and FWD. As long as it has an iPod adapter and a $3000 navigation system and the roundel, people will buy it.

wtf, why a 4 banger.... this should have came out earlier, and they should have put it into the current 135i.... smaller car, smaller engine, smaller budget.

I am interested. If it goes through with the next 3 , it might just be my next bimmer! Always wanted turbo. I hope it has lesser issues than the N54 did.

A twin turbo 4 is retarded IMO. Just go with a properly sized single turbo on a 4 banger and lag isn't a problem.

The only problem the N54 has is fuel pump failures...... correct me if I'm wrong but I believe all the wastegate failures are due to people overboosting.... The N54 engine is almost flawless, German engineering at its best. Maybe you missed all the awards the N54 got in 2007/08

i know that those are nothing like bimmers, but Calibber SRT-4 and Cobalt SS have 4-cylinder turbo'ed engines right??

if they can do it, BMW can do it, and even better ...

i still think that a N/A I6 should still be there ...

If they built it like a turbo s2000 that was able to rev the piss out of it with super fast spool up/throttle response I would be their first customer, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

An s2000 isnt a turbo car.

^^ Yeah, I think he was saying sort of the same thing I was -- that with two turbos on 4 cylinders, I'd think you'd have to rev really high before they kick in, or use tiny turbos.

So that means this motor will make more than the 230hp 328. Awesome if true, but I have a hard time believing bmw will do that since people perceive more cyl to be 'better' and will therefore pay more for them

If they bring a turbo 4 to the US market you can be ASSURED that it will have a single turbo, not two.
