catalyst converter options.

I recently got a 14 535M Package & a code came up stating that the catalytic converter threshold was below.....etc. I'm not trying to break the bank getting an original OEM.
So im thinking about going straight down pipe(catless) however im not certain if this would hinder me passing emissions inspection in NYC? I do want a little more voice from my exhaust but I don't want to be too loud as of now. Any advice as to how I should go about dealing with this situation.

Catless will definitely fail emissions. Are you sure the code isn't O2 below threshold? That would be most likely the upstream O2 sensor. What is the exact trouble code?

You can get Catless Downpipe plus defouler and there won't be any codes. But I did notice when I went Catless without a tune I had bad gas mileage.

I would still suspect the upstream O2 sensor (you didn't say what year your car is or the mileage, that matters). I had that same code on my last car and it was the O2 sensor.

I would still suspect the upstream sensor. The downstream just monitors the upstream so rarely fails. Here's a link for the upstream sensor...
