Towing in a dolly
Hi,
I'm moving soon, and i'm renting a truck with a dolly. Well I was reading the towing guide from budget, and it said for cars with rear or all wheel drive, you have to disconnect the drive shaft. I have a all wheel drive, but i don't know why it has to be disconnected. Has anyone ever put their car on a dolly? and if you did, did you disconnect anything? FYI it's not a car tow ( 2 wheels on ground) dolly = all 4 wheels are off ground I have a e92 xi incase your wondering |

If it is a car with automatic transmission and you drag it on its driving wheels, you will burn out the transmission even if it is in neutral.
If it is an all wheel drive, drag it on any set of wheels will burn out the transfer case. You'll need a flatbed. However if all 4 wheels are off the ground you should be OK.

Try and have someone drive the car to wherever you are going.

You can not tow an all wheel drive BMW PERIOD!!! Must be on a flat bed or have it shipped. If you tow it with 2 wheels on the ground you will damage the transmission and the transfer case.

Flat bed is the only way to move the car without being driven IMHO

you can have it shipped for 600 bucks depending on the distance.
but you should be ok with all 4s off the ground. no wheels are moving right?

Your car was shipped to the dealer through a covered shipping truck. So you should probably trust it since it's already been on one of those.

why would you need to disconnect the drive shaft if all four wheels are off the ground when towing? I'm sure BMW North America doesn't do this when shipping cars.

I'm not sure how you are moving and who is paying for it (i.e. your employer). But most moving companies moving people across country will pack a car in the moving van just like it was a piece of furniture. Ask the moving company.
