Speaker upgrades on an e90

So, sorry if this has been covered a thousand times but IÂ’ve read so many threads thereÂ’s too much info aha.

So IÂ’ve got an 06 e90 320d saloon, IÂ’ve read about different sound systems hifi etc and I have no idea what I have.
The cars about to hit 200k and the passenger side door speaker has just started farting, I was just going to replace the two door speakers for some better ones, but then I started down the rabbit hole of alpine/blaupunkt/L7 and now it might be worth getting a kit of all of it at once

Is it worth getting the whole kit with subs and amps?

Are the standard subs any better when used with an amp?

Thanks to this forum IÂ’ve found out about putting tweeters in, is the wiring in the door already for those?

IÂ’m used to fiddling with systems, but on old cars with aftermarket head units, IÂ’m a bit mused when it comes to the more modern stuff like this.

Any help would be awesome.

If you have the base system just adding new speakers will
not get you very far and may lessen the volume and even
sound worse.

You have to know what you are starting with there are three
different systems.

Is it worth upgrading depends on how much you value your car
tunes and how much you have to spend to make a difference and how much you can DIY.

You can get a audiophile system in for between 1000 and 1500 US if you DIY.

If you have the base system this is one of the most asked
question here . Do an advanced search on "base system "
titles only .

Cheers for the info!

So mine is the base system, no tweeters no centre speaker in the dash.

What would make it sound worse with new speakers? Was looking at a set of tweeters and door speakers and buying the new plastic with the holder for the tweeters

I value my car but it’s done a lot of miles so I don’t really want to spend to much on it because you never know when it’ll die aha

Fine with diy, was a mechanic for a good number of years, not too sound system literate but I can wire stuff and take stuff apart easily

The doors on these are pretty easy and the floor not
to bad for access.

If you read the links I provided the specifics of how
to modify the base system are layed out in detail.
Read the last link .

So after reading many different things, upgrading using the standard headunit seems incredibly complicated and expensive, maybe I’ll just get a new standard speaker and leave it alone aha

You could get a logic 7 setup for probably $650 including the amp. You'd probably need to run wires to places where you currently don't have speakers & ensure they make their way to the harness that feeds the logic 7 amp.

I think 🤔 you can code the radio to logic 7 but I wouldn't swear by it. If not, you'll have to get a logic 7 head unit.

Just get a decent used amp, technic harness, and then upgrade the speakers.

L7 not worth the hassle if you're not specifically wanting that.

I got my JL 700/5 for less than $200 Canadian (used, mint condition), sufficient to power the whole car (though the under seat woofers are mono in my case).

Even a 4 channel amp will do well, and just power the front doors stage.

I've been thinking about BAVSOUND upgrade for a while but do not know anyone who has it. You only upgraded 2 speakers? What is the difference? Loudness? Clarity? Bass?

Just did two midrange and 2 tweeters. Yeah clarity is definitely better. You can just tell crisp and sharper sound. I just got subwoofer too but it will take 12 hours till i can see the result they say. You can just buy the whole kit and try to find separate ones on ebay. I cant think of any other options thats plug and play.

Tried bavsound subwoofer. It definitely makes huge difference. Im not sure about deep base sound yet. But you can tell drum sound feels more real like listening to the instrument than hearing through filtered speaker. I recommend this along with speaker upgrade. Speaker (voice) subwoofer (beats)

I’m planning on sticking a sub in the boot and maybe doing the tweeter upgrade atm, I’m happy with how it sounds other than distortion when I try listening to heavy rap music loud.

I’ve got a Sony amp and sub with a power cap in my loft so might aswell try that out with piggybacking the underseats and playing with the eq’s to see if I can get a good sound out of it all

You almost have to get a 12 or 15" sub to handle rap. Also, the subs under the seats would have to be pure mid-range type subs with a range of say 80 to 500mhz. If you had a sound processor like an old school JBL MS-8 or a newer Alpine and or JL Audio version, that would help your speakers reach their potential. Amps have cross overs yes, but sound processors help you really dial in each channel more specifically.

When you talk about upgrading speakers without
upgrading the amplifier you have to be clear about
which system you are starting out with to compare
results . Because the three systems all have different
output power on a per channel basis.

I'm running the Bimmertech Alpha One in my DD, it's a complete direct replacement speaker upgrade. Massive difference in the fullness of sound and bottom end.

I don’t think I’m as fussy as you guys about sound quality, I have the base system.

Any of you guys know where to get signal from for an amp and sub?

Seen a few things with twisted wires but I’m guessing those are for one of the better systems.
