Help with My Situation...
Ok so basically I have to sell my X5 before my 335xi shows up from production or i will be forced to trade it in and take a 4-5k$ hit because i owe the bank too much money. I'm in the ny/nj area and have never sold a car worth more then 10k privately so i am having trouble finding serious buyers and am not very good with this. Anyone have any suggestions on the fastest and most efficient way to sell a car that's worth over 15k? I am relatively new to the forums and have already noticed you all seem to be really good with this kind of stuff. Any recommendations would be really appreciated and a great help. I have not yet tried ebaymotors or anything online like that because i am not sure if its worth my time if it is ineffective. Ofcourse, I will post pics of my NEW car when it comes in because you are all pic junkies lol. Thanks for your time.

Not sure you have one in your area but I've sold two cars to CarMax and the experience was good for me in both cases. You get somewhere in between trade in and private party.

When selling online, make sure you either get cash for the car or get money order (whatever it is that will ensure you're safe). Just don't get scammed when selling it privately.

I would also make sure the money order is certified from a major bank. I read about too many car scams that involve regular money orders.

I have just sold two cars in the past 6 months and craigslist was definitely my best advertising medium. I had much better responses from it over our local newspapers and autotrader. It did take time but the good news is that we're entering into winter when more people start thinking about SUVs, bad news of course is the gas prices putting downward pressure on the resale value of SUVs.
If you're going to use craigslist I can give you my template for a much better looking HTML ad within craigslist. |

Just try to be tactful, one of my buyers was really insulted and almost walked away....which made me more nervous but as it turns out he was legit but sensitive. He looked a little rough and I guess he thought I was judging him; I would've done the same thing if he looked like Skippy from the local tennis club. |

One polite way to bring it up is if you go the bank you can have their notary do the title work if you have it. I always try to have title in hand for these sales. It makes the process much easier. I can understand the buyer feeling a bit weird about giving you the money and you telling him "I'll give you the title in a week or two when it shows up but, I'll take your money now." |
