Winter Wheel and Tire Setup (plus some OEM wheel info)
After being warned of death and destruction for driving on my summer tires in the winter, I decided to buy a set of winter wheels and tires.
I’m a fan of silver wheels and saving money so I went with a set manufactured in China along with Pirelli Scorpion Winters in 255/45/20 in a square setup. There were other more expensive wheel options I wanted but I had already spent so much on the car and paint protection I didn’t want to go crazy for a 3 month wheel. Here are some pics and info: Tires: 255/45R-20 PIRELLI SCORPION WINTER XL https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...=545VR0SCORWXL TPMS Sensors (Tire Rack – no link): HUF RDE077 ($40/each!) Wheels: Drag DR-77 20x9, 22mm offset https://www.discounttiredirect.com/b...-dr-77/p/62919 Wanted more of an OEM look so I got some BMW center caps https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...m/36136783536/ Also got some //M valve stem caps as a gift Winter wheels and tires weigh in at 64 lbs – right at stock weight: Although the X3M has zero brake dust () I gave a good coat of wax to the wheels before installing. Harley Davidson (and other brands I guess) S100 wax is my fav because it gives a good shine and no residue. I also waxed the calipers – we’ll see if any of that helps. https://www.amazon.com/S100-13700W-C...46909119&psc=1 I don’t currently have jack stands that will fit in the rectangle jack points, so I got one of these in order to jack up the car. I just supported with the jack and did one wheel at a time – worked well along with a 17mm socket and wrench (retorqued to 101 ft/lbs per the manual): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Here are the wheels installed: Now that was done, it was time to clean up/wax the OEMs and put in the rack until spring. Front Wheels Weight: Rear Wheel Weight: Center Cap (note, this is smaller than the 68mm standard I linked above) As I was cleaning up the wheels, I noticed some bad rashing on the inside of one of the fronts. As this was the first time I took the wheels off, it was either factory, dealer, or PPF shop who did this. Grrrr! I initially went with 38 PSI but the ride felt mushy so I jacked up to 42 PSI. I'll see how that rides and may end up somewhere in the middle. Hope this was helpful! : |

Glad I could contribute.
Shockingly, the fronts cleared the calipers no problem. They should fit as the 20”s are the standard non-comp wheel size and the brakes are the same. Also they were guaranteed to fit by Discount Tire Direct. Still, on the 21”s there is not a ton of clearance but you only lose 1/2” going down 1”. I admit I was puckered when I put them on |

They said that the wheels needed different lugs (longer?). They are also chrome so they go with the silver wheels better than the OEM black lugs. The lugs have a slotted surface around them which requires a “key” (included). It was under $1000 for the set and the salesman (goes by “Blaine”) threw in some extra discounts so didn’t really cost the $50. The first salesman I spoke with disputed fitment listed on their site. Blaine was much friendlier and concurred with my findings on the site. If you are interested I can PM you his contact info. As an aside, the offset is less so the wheels are pushed out a bit more than OEM. I will get some pics of that if anyone is interested. But I’ll also be getting some mud flaps |

Oh and these wheels do not require any centering rings. Just steady hands so you don’t scratch calipers when installing as there isn’t a lot of room for error.
Edited to add - the TPMS sensors (OEM brand) from Tire Rack synced up with no issues. I was shocked how much cheaper they were than other sources (like 3x cheaper!) |

Great thread; I plan on doing exactly the same thing next winter. The wheels/tires I found on Tire Rack came to about $2300 including TPMS.

Crap OEM are so heavy
Thanks for your hard work and information! How did you find out the bolt-pattern being 5x112?
