Expecting snow?
My advice is to put it on auto and forget about it. Just because the light is on doesn't mean the compressor is engaged. It just shows that its true function, climate control, is working.

I was in the same boat as you... coded with BimmerCode. Now I am able to manually decide if I want AC on or off.

The compressor comes on when temperature and/or humidity conditions require it. Otherwise it's off. That's not a BMW exclusive. I have mine set on auto, at 68F, year round, and I do get snow, sometimes six months out of twelve. When the weather is hot the compressor kicks in and the climate control system cools. When the weather is cold the climate control system heats. What BMW should change is the button that says AC. It should say 'Climate Control', because that's what it does.
