How do you turn it on? Can’t find it in the Idrive anywhere?

Not sure how the UK cars are optioned...but in the US, you have to have the Executive Package to have Gesture control...

Well in that case...its under My Vehicle > iDrive Settings > Gestures

I use the “next track” gesture. It’s perfect for Spotify/Apple CarPlay.

Used volume control a couple times and I could see waving off an incoming call ok, but the main issue that will keep it somewhat of a gimmick is that you can just as easily do both of those from the steering wheel. Much like voice control, if you don’t learn all the available commands it’s not something that pops into mind that often when you go to actually do it, or there’s an equally easy way that works better.

It's the limited functions that make it not as useful as it should be you can go forward next track or next radio station but not backwards, if you like to gesticulate whilst on the phone you'll find yourself on Sunny Punjab FM when you come off the call.

As a person who talks with his hands a bunch, I had to disable it from day one. The music kept getting louder all the time! Pretty useless feature for sure.

Slightly related Q - My Macan allowed me to switch between my favorite XM/radio stations by scrolling up/down on the steering wheel. Scrolling on the X3's steering wheel shows me all stations, not just my favorites. Is there a way around that? Can I just scroll between my faves from the wheel?

If you are under the Presets menu in the iDrive, then the steering wheel button will only scroll your favorites like you want...

It corresponds to whatever menu is on the iDrive

Use the "Mode" button on the steering wheel until you get to "Presets" and then you will be able to scroll through your presets.
