My Journey, X3M40i > X3M > X3MC

Wow.. tonight I have a 2020 X3MC in my garage and I can’t believe it.

I decided to trade my 2020 M2C to get something more practical (need the space and a big boot). I was convinced that the X3M40i was the sensible choice. I worked hard to convince myself of this. I drove the car several times at the dealer and I was very impressed with it. THEN, I made the pivotal mistake of driving an X3M. THEN, I made an even worse mistake of driving an X3MC. I tried so hard to rationalize the M40i, and then the X3M but the Competition X3M is just so epic.. sigh. There is a difference in exhaust systems between the non Comp and the Comp and the exhaust is what put me over the edge for the more expensive car.

Will post clean pics tomorrow.. we had rain all day in Austin, Texas

P.S. How in the world does this car handle the way it does? It defies all logic. Also, the journalists who have whined like babies about the ride quality are complete morons. It drives like an M3. Thank you, BMW!

Agreed I don't understand the issues around the ride quality it's firm but that's what it should be.

What are the exhaust differences between M and MC?

Pics or articles you can share?

The MC has distinctly louder burbles off throttle and the note is different, more aggressive. This was very obvious when my CA and I idled the MC I ended up buying and the M I didn’t buy. We had both cars side by side with the windows down and we varied the revs.. it was a big difference when we did that.. I was sold on the MC at that moment. Now according to my CA, the X3MC is the only car in BMW’s lineup that doesn’t have the active sound design due the Sport exhaust.. I would like to fact check that, but that’s what he said a BMWNA employee told him at the Spartanburg facility

Nice! Very helpful comparo on exhaust. Were you able to tell any differences in ride quality or handling between the two?

I had a similar thought process but started with X3M. I tried to convince myself that the lower cost and better mileage on the m40i would be more sensible. But then I paid my car off and so the monthly payment didn’t seem so bad. When we got to the dealer went straight for the X3MC to test drive skipping the m40i and base M. Ended up with a Donnington grey X3MC very similar to yours. Still a bit concerned with how thirsty these beasts are, but otherwise it’s a great car!

It has ASD. Pull a fuse and it's much quieter inside.

But it’s SO much fun to drive, does it matter? But yea.. it’s got to be factored in. This car is about performance and fun. Fuel economy at the bottom of the list. If you need the economy, go for the M40i, but then you sacrifice the razor sharp performance and HP. Got to pay to play, unless you want to go all electric, and there are compromises with that too, right?!

It IS very fun to drive, but it’s the wife’s car so I won’t be enjoying it all the time She was already getting worse mpg in the city in her Honda Pilot than I get in the M3 and the Pilot at least was regular unleaded. Premium in CA is like 3.89 or something. But ultimately, fun won out over practicality

Rescue yourself from Socialist taxes in California. Our premium fuel in Texas is below $2.75 a gallon.
