How to launch?

Ok so with the RIS done I was stopped with nothing around, in MDM mode, sport+ and manual gearbox S3, nailed the throttle but it was at least 1-2 seconds of nothing and then it took off like a rocket.

I know the torque issue delays things, but has anyone found a decent technique to launch? I've not done an LC yet b

everything you did was right apart from wait till the turbo spools, then let your foot off the brake.

Hold on the brake for around 3-5 seconds then go for it.

In a true manual you'd have the revs up before you release the clutch. That's essentially what LC does, right? So there's really nothing else you can do than either live with not leaping away from the lights, or using LC.

I think he meant, is there an option that isn't using LC which I assume you are describing.

Yep, not sure I fancy being at the lights holding 4k rpm in LC mode

I've also heard progressive throttle application helps so will try that too. 3-5 secs waiting for the turbo to spool is like a 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo

BootMod to the rescue in the next few months.

think i would just get it rolling then mash the throttle.......or do full LC

LC on the F31 was less than impressive anyway. But try it in the Focus and HOLLY FUCK!

I don't think any of my previous M cars have responded well to just slamming the throttle fully open from a standing start it certainly caused a delay with my F80 M3 and F10 M5 and then all hell broke loose, whether it's a "did you really mean that" feature I'm not too sure, if you're not using LC then it's best to be progressive with the throttle or snap it open after a short progressive push.

In fact I think my 740d xdrive doesn't like it either and sits there wondering what to do for a while.

Without using LC, it's a dog until the turbo spools up... then it'll take off hard. I personally have counted "3 Mississippi" with no power (rush of TQ) until boost comes on from a dead stop.

Using LC is also not realistic at stop lights. Hold it too briefly (2 seconds) and the car still lags hard off the line. As boost has not fully built up prior to take off.

Hold it too long (4 seconds+) and the brakes cannot hold the car back and it'll start creeping forward rapidly. Basically damn near impossible to set LC properly at a stoplight, in case a TrackHawk or AMG pull up

I could hold my Audi TTRS on LC all day. When I am ready to go, I would just let off the throttle and she'd fly.

Both my 440i MPPSK and C63 could be mashed (in the dry) and off they went. It's fine, I've felt this before in 4WD cars - the A45 is the same.

The good thing is that the practise is the fun part. Looking forward to the fun.

Tipped 1,000 miles today so booking in tomorrow for ASAP. Enjoyed getting to know the car and how well it handles but really looking forward to launching and hearing the exhaust at higher revs.

I’ve not had luck with LC either. I’m guessing I didn’t wait long enough. The trackhawk would eat my lunch. That thing launches HARD every time.

Don't I recall seeing in the manual that launch control should only be used after around 3000 miles ?

take it to DSC OFF and it'll work like a charm. I have no issues getting launch control to work.

it is under the "running in" section - but the manual is far for explicit on the whether they are referring to 1200m or 3100m

I'm attaching some images of how onfireX5 instructed me to set up M2 for an easy prep to LC. Appreciation to him for sharing, as it makes it incredibly quick (less than a sec) to push M2 twice at the line at the Strip, then mash the brake with one foot and same to the accelerator with the other foot, try to hold it for 3 sec as doberzus wrote, then let loose of the brake and away you go. Fool-proof if you set M2 up as he suggested. Even if you can't hold it for the full 3 sec to get max boost, you're still going to be much quicker off the line than regular stop-light launch in Sport+ and D3 (roughly 0.4 sec on average).

I may be reading it wrong, kzg1969, but it seems the Owners Manual is pretty clear about not using LC at all during the Breaking-in period. I know a lot of Drivers do, but BMW clearly instructs to not use LC until the the 'Breaking-in period' is completed, which they define as the 5,000 km (3,100 mile) point.

Make your life easy and set up the M2 button like I did on my M5 and X3MC. Push it twice and that’s it !

Go to M settings in Idrive. Select M2. Put everything on Sport Plus. Put trans in Manual Max Has to be Manual and it WILL shift automatically IF you launch with the Flags on. Last setting is turn off TC totally (no MDM will not work) Zero TC. Save all of those to M2.

When you want to LC. Press the M2 button twice( had to be twice to confirm TC disabled).

Push the foot brake down hard.

Snap the accelerator pedal to the floor FAST. (Push it slowly and it will not trigger LC).

Count to three. 1 second 1, 1 second2, 1 second 3. And just let off the brake pedal. You will hit 60mph in 3.55ish raw (3.3 corrected with rollout) and the transmission will auto shift as long as then accelerator is wot. When you let off the accelerator, the trans goes back into manual mode.

I do owe that to the forum. It would be the right thing to do. Unfortuantely, my lame @ss is in Italy for 9 more days with winter weather and Scorpion Winters on the car. While they are awesome in the snow and cold weather, they don't exactly inspire 300+ kmph driving like the PS4s sitting on my garage floor do. I just bought a Dragy to document but have no Go Pro for vids. Maybe I'll be able to take her out on a stretch of Autostrada without speed traps to give it a run. If so, I'll post here.
