Why does one of these G20s have a front radar sensor

A G20 is a possible replacement for my F30. It would most likely be an M340i, but I wouldn't completely rule out a 330d, which I slightly prefer aesthetically (exhausts and grille).

While I would probably buy new, I have been taking a look on the AUC site to see some real world pictures of colour / wheels etc. One odd thing caught my eye - when looking at two cars with an apparently identical spec, apart from the 30d/20d engine, one has a front radar sensor and one does not. I can't see anything in the spec which could account for this difference - I would expect neither to have it. Here are the pics of a black 330d and a grey 320d:

Here is the listing for the black 330d: https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/2...b-3ccc676db884

Here is the listing for the grey 320d: https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/2...0-d20485948ff8

Incidentally, I notice that the 330d has larger exhaust pipes, as with some F30 models:

But can anyone explain the presence of the radar sensor on the 320d, and not on the 330d?

Cheers!

Driver Assistant option on the 320d (radar cruise). It is well worth having if you do motorway miles...

It's the Active Cruise Control sensor.

I can't see that listed in the spec of the 320d. It just seems to show "Cruise control with brake function" on both of them.

The steering wheel of the 320d does not seem to have that functionality either:

Have I missed it?

No, you're right, I was just looking at the website photos it doesn't have the steering wheel distance controls. Very strange...!?

I thought so too. There was a recent case on another board of someone reporting a new X3M delivered with X4M badges, although they are nailed together in Spartanburg where quality control isn't so high. I wouldn't expect the same from Munich!

Perhaps there is another explanation.

It wouldn't be listed as active cruise, but Driver Assist Pro, as it's only available within that package.

If the distance regulator on the steering wheel isn’t there then it doesn’t have adaptive cruise.

i think in future they'll all have the buttons just not be activated. Then they could start peddling OTA upgrades to vehicle functions as an aftersale opportunity.

I think the radar sensor was dropped on later cars and its function replicated using the cameras and software image processing.

From what I gathered, its not the same sensor you are getting with DAP option and it's only present on the early build cars.

Hi Hamera, thanks for you reply. Of the two pictures which is the early build sensor you refer to? Mine is the bottom one.

Curious, but can you confirm the shape? I have DAP on a Sept 2019 M340i but the radar shape is the style hamera posted (rounded) rather than the more trapezoid shape in that 320d.

Simple answer - more rounded sensor is a DAP equipped car, and the more trapezoid shaped is only on early build G20's without DAP. If you look at later build cars there is still a radar sensor there on non-DAP cars, but it's behind the mesh.

Mine is like the rounded shape in the picture above. I have DAP and built Jan 2020.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. But I’m currently searching for a used G20 and am finding some with the Trapezoid radar in the grill even though they don’t have DAP specced. Does that mean the radar does nothing or is just a blank? So can I remove it and get a standard lower grill?

Many thanks

Are you looking at 2019 (early production) cars by any chance?
