Tyre Noise
Quite a few comments on this subject but is anyone able to evaluate it for example using a noise meter in the various x1 configs or other vehicles.

Don't have a X1 but we have been trying a lot of different tires in different cars. Normally the less db they are rated the better but it also depends on the car, the tire pressure, the speed index, weather and age of the tire.
I have however been trying some X1s and I have heard less noise on 18" RFTs summer tires on an X1 compared to non-RFTs winter tires on 17" on another X1. The best ever tire regarding noise we have had were som Dunlop RFT winter tires for an E82 rated at 210km/h. We drive so much that our tires rarely age more than three years so it isn't age that makes them noisy.

I wonder if it could be that the X1 is so quiet in the cockpit that the tyre noise is more audible than other makes of cars. A comparison with other makes may be more enlightening.

I tried a friends X1 today and he had way more tire noise than I have in my 335i. I had also a X1 loaner for some days and that one had way less tire noise than my 335i. Both my 335i and the X1 loaner uses the standard tires mounted by BMW. My wife's M240i again has less tire noise than mine and is on par with the X1 or slightly above.
A couple of weeks ago i tried a Mercedes GLC and that was on par with the loaner X1. I am considering the X1 as a quiet car and I am looking forward to get one some time next year . If it is noisy I would blame the tires.

I have just fitted 17" BMW Alloy Winter Wheels and Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 tyres - they seem to ride "better" with maybe the same (or slightly) less tyre noise than the 18" Alloys fitted with Bridgestone Tupanza......... but I cannot be 100% sure - the Cabin in the X1 is quite big, so maybe you "feel" the noise more - my car is an 18d Xdrive, M Sport.
Just a point to watch out for - the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 are directional tyres, (i.e. marked on the tyre with a "rotation" arrow, they only fit one way, either on the near side or the offside of the car), so just check if you are fitting tyres |

Just put 18" Sottozero 3s on ours (28iX xLine) for winter. I think they're slightly quieter than the Cintauro P7 all-seasons that it came with, but too early to say for sure. Ride is, again, maybe slightly softer, and turn-in seems unaffected. Looking forward to see how they do when it gets slippery.

There is an App “Toolbox Pro” that has a decibel meter. I have this on my iPad.
When my car is in eco mode the engine drops to idle on the overrun so the only noise could be from tyres . If others could do this at say 50 mph we could have a reasonable comparison.
