Emissions test failed with P140A code
I live in Washington and have a 2008 SULEV N51 E93 with 78k miles. Just failed an emissions test with a P140A code. I checked it with a Foxwell scanner and I see the following:
2A00/not present -> DME Secondary Air System 2A99/not present -> DME crankshaft - exhaust camshaft reference Are these the same codes as P140A? These codes came up after I replaced the valvetronic gasket. I'm wondering if I didn't install something back correctly. Any help appreciated. Thanks! |

P140A | 2AOO | Secondary Air Injection System Flow Bank 1 and Bank 2 [Bentley] N51 | P140A | 2A00 | DME: Secondary air system | MSV80 [BMW Fault Code Lookup] P1553 | 2A99 | Engine Position System 'B' Performance (Bank 1) [Exhaust Cam Sensor, Bentley] N51 | P1553 | 2A99 | DME: Crankshaft - exhaust camshaft, reference | MSV80 [BMW Fault Code Lookup] Here is the TIS circuit diagram for the Secondary Air Pump for your 2008 N51; I would start by checking power supply; F16 which provides power to the Relay Electromagnet is ON when Terminal 87 active (Ignition on, and briefly after Ignition OFF): https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...system/vPDGiGd Here is the Pump Location: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e93-328i-cab/SJUQy0Y Here is Fault Information with Service Plan & Service Notes; I believe there are TWO hoses, one to Bank 1 and the other to Bank 2; my understanding is that the code says NEITHER bank is getting air from pump: http://www.bmwfault.codes/XMLDiagVie...QANQAxADAANAA= As for the 2A99/P1553 fault, that MAY be just a hiccup (check & see if currently present and how many times & at what mileage it was set). I would simply CLEAR that code after recording ALL FF Data & Fault Details, and see if it recurs. My understanding of that code is that if it were constant, the engine would NOT start (it would crank but NOT fire) as the DME needs Exhaust Cam signal to time ignition and injector pulse. Please let us know what you find, George |

Thanks gbalthrop
I looked at the secondary pump and found that the hose that connects it to the check value had detached! Plugged it back in, reset the codes, and the codes haven't come back yet! I think its fixed! Thanks! |
