Newbie question about power steering

Had my first BMW about a month now. Really just getting to know it better and finding out how much I have missed over the years not owning a BMW before now. Every brand of automobile has it's quirks and tendencies about how it drives. Therefore I have a question...

The 2008 BMW 328i I own steers kind of heavy compared to my F150. The amount of effort is a lot more even though it goes anywhere I steer it no problem and drives well. Is this just normal how BMW steering requires a little more effort to turn? I am not complaining. I just want to know if it's normally a little harder to turn compared to american cars. Thanks for reading.

Yes... E90s have very heavy steering compared to most cars. My F150 can be turned with pinky finger, it's very light in general and comparison.

A little search would answer this question FYI, much talked about.

Generally, BMW has very heavy steering. E9X is famous is heavy steering like they don't have any power steering working in motion.
If you don't have Active Steering option, I feel it tends to be even heavier.

When you get used to it, you can steer with one hand, but no steering with pinky

And there is a reason for that. BMWs (and Benz’s) are designed for high speed cruising on Autobahns, and therefoe have steering that is well balanced for that. That is why BMW market their cars as being “the ultimate driving machine” which is aimed at more enthusiastic drivers who appreciate the act of driving a car for its own sake. Therefore, they tend to make less compromise in the design hence generally less power assistance which allows the driver to have a better feel for what the front wheels are doing, enhanced by the fact the BMW cars are rear-wheel drive.

I have driven many cars with light to heavy steering so I’m used to adjusting to any vehicle when I get behind the wheel. As for my 335, I like the heavier steering because it makes it seem like I can feel the road and more in control.
