N52: How much blow-by is too much blow-by? (Video)

Like the title says, I’m curious whether this looks normal or not.

Hard to tell from the video, but I'd say it looks fine...possibly even pretty good.

Thanks! Forgot to mention car has 305,000 km’s on it. Oil cap can be removed relatively easily but there is a fairly audible whoosh sound from vacuum.

200k miles...I'm upgrading my assessment to 'pretty good' Is it consuming oil..what made you ask the question?

Swell!

Hard to say whether it's consuming oil, as there's currently an oil leak. It's not the oil pan, as this gasket was replaced a couple years ago by the dealership. It appears to be coming from where the p/s axle enters the oil pan, or in that general vicinity, though I could be wrong. I've just let it be as it doesn't seem serious.

My primary reason for asking was that it seemed like a decent amount of exhaust gas entering the crankcase; however, I lack a reference point for what's normal with these engines. The oil looks not great either, but I realize it likely doesn't take long to become somewhat opaque.

Well hopefully someone else can chime in too. I think it's perfectly normal, but it really is a finger-in-the-air guess. Maybe someone will have some ideas about the leak too

You sure that's exhaust?

When I remove my cap it looks exactly like that. I also get the slight whoosh sound when removing the cap. Mine doesn't smell like exhaust though, so I don't think it's blow by from the combustion chamber. I believe it's just oil vapor, and that's exactly why we have cyclonic oil separators on these cars.

When I open the oil cap it does smell like exhaust, but that is a good point: it certainly could just be oil vapour. If I really wanted, I suppose I could send an oil sample to Blackstone, but I’m not sure there would be any action I could take in the event the results tell me I’ve got a problem... (I suppose I could shorten OCI...)
