new battery registration?
My battery just died and I bought a replacement from the dealership. My understanding is that all new batteries need to be registered following install. However, the sales rep at the dealership told me the non-agm (white) battery I bought does not need to be registered. I've seen a few posts saying the same thing.
Does anyone have a definitive answer for this? I have a BAVtechnic cable to register the new battery, but figured I'd ask before I got it out of storage. Thanks. |

I've always been of an understanding that if you replace a battery with exactly the same variant (amps capacity), you do not need to register it. But most shops would tell you that you have to.

If you replace with (A) a different TYPE (AGM vs. Conventional Flooded Lead Acid) OR (B) with one of a different CAPACITY or Ah rating, then you need to CODE or change settings in your CAS so that the battery will be charged in optimal fashion. "Battery Registration" per se ONLY enters the mileage/km shown on your odometer into the Power Module Memory for future reference by a tech working on your car, and does NOT change the Battery Type/ Capacity Setting in the Power Module, or the "Histogram" which is the record of Battery SoC (State of Charge) over the last 5 days. That Histogram will be over-written in 5 days even if you don't reset it, and therefore you do NOT need to do anything (but install it properly without messing up the BST connector or the IBS Connector ;-) if same TYPE/ CAPACITY. So if one changes battery TYPE, or Capacity by more than 5Ah, then there are THREE (3) steps: 1) Code the Power Module by changing Settings in CAS with NCS or equivalent; 2) Reset the Histogram; 3) "Register" the Battery (Batterietausch Registrieren) which simply enters km in PM for tech reference. Sounds like you had an HONEST & knowledgeable Parts guy at the Dealership. George |
