Warm startup dies frequently

Every so often, after having driven the car a few miles (haven't tracked the miles driven), but assuming enough to get the engine up to temp, I'll get back in the car after having it rest for 30+ minutes and the car will die immediately after starting it up.

It'll roar up and sound fine, but then instantly drops down and dies. If I press start again, it fires up just fine like nothing is wrong.

I've experienced this at least 20-30 times now this summer, and I think I've identified the pattern. It has never happened on a cold startup. It only happens after the car is up to temp, and the car has been sitting for 30+ minutes or so.

It's almost as if the car isn't get enough fuel pressure and just dies. The next startup gets the pumps primed up right and then has no issue.

It's been doing this since about 8,000 miles, and I have 13,000 miles now.

This seems like this should never happen in a modern car with push to start, let alone a high-end and sophisticated $100k+ car.

Anyone else experience this?

Yup.

Actually happened to me today and probably started happening around 3K miles (6K currently).

Only when warm and after it's been sitting a while; dies on 1st startup and then starts perfectly on 2nd attempt.

More than likely low/high pressure fuel pump.

Popped into dealership on Monday to top off coolant and briefly discussed with my SA who suspects fuel pump as well.

Will have them take a look next time I need some kind of service.

If you get this resolved post up.

Also have been experiencing this. Not necessarily when the engine is hot, but when it is just simply a hot day. Last time it happened my car was sitting in the hot sun (around 90 degrees F)for about 3 hours and it occurred

It's died on me only once, but sometimes the car will start, RPMs will flutter, and the car sounds/behaves like it wants to die. I'm sure it sounds funny to folks outside seeing a brand new car not start up properly. It's worse when I'm fueled up with e30 blend.

I had this exact thing happen to me. I took it in and they caught the fault in the system and replaced the high pressure fuel pumps.
It did it again but not as often- maybe . I own the car and want it right, so I took it back in. They had it for a few days and waited on a report from Germany, and ended up replacing the low pressure fuel pump too. I ran a couple of tanks of ethanol free gas in it and , fingers crossed, hasnt happened again. Have your SA investigate these options.

Used to have this happen back when I had a 2002 (E46 M3) It was a software issue. Only happened on warm start ups and summer blend fuel(winter time it was fine) First start would sputter and die. Second start was fine. They issued a TSB and updated software for fuel management and it was fine. My bet is , that you just need a software update.
