Assistance Needed with E90 Sunroof
Hi everyone,
Long time lurker, first or second time poster. I just got into my e90 this morning and i got a sunroom warning light as soon as turned on the car. When i turn the switch to pull back the sunroof, it seems that it comes out about 3" then stops, if i press it again it goes back by another 3" and then stops. I tried pressing up on the button for 30 seconds or so but nothing happens. The roof closes manually fine when holding the button, but not by itself anymore. Any ideas would be appreciated. Ray |

If you have access to a scan tool, reinitialize the sunroof using it. Obviously you’ll need one capable of reading BMW codes, or software like ISTA. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea of what’s going on.

close the roof all the way manually. including the sun shade. then perform the “initialise” procedure; hold the button in the “up” position for 30 seconds.

Look at the sliders on the sides, you should be able to manually close the sunroof with a pick or screwdriver. Did this to close the panoramic on my friend's sister's first gen X3. Then I did the initialization procedure for the sunroof and it fixed all the issues. Maybe lube it up a little on the sliders to help it.

Thank you all for the comments. I actually manually opened the sunroof, it was very hard to turn, so i ended up lubing the track and the cable to no avail.
Here is a video that demonstrates what is happening Any assistance is appreciated. |

So even once it’s completely closed, the initialization procedure does nothing? No movement or anything? Generally when windows/sunroof move in that fashion, it’s due to the anti-trap function not being learned. If following the initialization procedure to the letter is doing nothing, it should be possible to fix your problem by either running initialization using software (possible it’ll just do nothing as it’s been doing when you attempt to trigger the procedure manually), resetting (code default values) the FZD module, re-flashing the FZD module, or perhaps just disabling anti-trap altogether.
