Coolant hose?

Anyone know what this hose is for? where it goes, etc? It's really rusted and I think I want to replace it before it starts to leak. Part number/link would be great. I tried searching but I get other coolant hoses but not this one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Your serpentine belt tensioner is failing and needs replacement ASAP.

and....

Was your car strapped down in the cargo hold of the Titanic?

He's from "The Rock", salty water, salty air.

Roger that on the tensioner, it is starting to fail.

OP, try using a wire brush to remove the surface rust and put some rust converter on the steel if you want to buy some time.

Yeah, I did a scooter tour up that way once upon a time...

Vikings would stop there to salt their meats. 😂

My god.

At first glance I thought you had the branch of a small tree lodged down there.

What are the signs that a serpentine Tensioner is failing? It do make a slight noise.

And yea, I live in Newfoundland, Canada, Rust capital of the world. All they use on the roads are Road Salt and or salt brine. And living by the ocean, the salt is in the air. I also drive it year round, so it`s exposed to all the elements. For a 13 year old car it`s in half decent shape for a car on the Island.

Yea the ROCK is full of salt. Every car and truck starts to show signs of rust after a few years. My 6 year old F250 underbody is covered with rust. Crazy.

Yeah I`ll try and do something with the Tensioner. Not sure how much a pain in the ass it is to change out though.

Actually about 9 years ago there wasn`t a BMW dealership here. You had to ship them from the mainland to get one. I got mine in 2010 and there was only a handful here then. Now there everywhere here, very popular car. But I`ll never buy another one without a warranty. The dealership rapes you for service here. Like $175 an hour labor rate. Insane. I try to do the work that i`m capable of doing. Last resort is the STEALership.

The front lip of the belt is hanging off the pulley by a bout 2MM. It should be flush or even 0.5MM back from the edge of the pulley. With all that salt exposure, the single bolt (aluminum) that mounts the tensioner to the engine block is starting to bend from fatigue and corrosion. It's a common problem with the N52 engine. You should not wait very long to repair it.

BMW corrosion resistance is only matched by Volvo. Nobody else comes close, not even Mercedes. Vw/Audi had corrosion problems in the past. US trucks all seem to rust pretty badly

330xinewf:
Belt tensioner weakens
belt slips off
wraps around crank pulley
gets ripped to shreds
shreds pushed past crank seal into oil pan
clogs oil intake
engine destroys itself.

So, $100 tensioner/belt/bolt kit
becomes $5000 engine bill
in about 5 minutes.

Yes, it happens, and it happens often enough to get weeping moaning owners in most forums every so often. Many mechanics aren't even aware of it as a potential catastrophe.

Even if it doesn't destroy your engine right away, you have a $1800 bill to drop the oil pan, valve cover gasket and clean it out.

....so fix the belt, tensioner and pulley, and be thankful someone noticed.

You can do it in less than an hour.

Thanks for the explaination and advice. I will definitely be doing this. I watched a DIY on how to change it out and it's not too bad. Cheers from the ROCK!!
