Some MP3 files not displayed

I use 256GB flash disk in my X3 F25. Everything works fine. When I put the same disk into X5, not all files are displayed. Has someone experienced it? I tried to change the format from FAT32 to NTFS, but it didn't solve anything.

Do you mean the songs are not showing or the album art is not being displayed?

Some songs are not showing... album art is ok (for the songs, that do show). Everything worked fine on X3.

Okay, just wanted to check on what wasn't showing. Have you noticed any patterns to the ones that aren't showing? Something with the file names or format/settings in the file?

What I have found so far:

- the problem is not disk format related... NTFT, FAT32,exFAT... the problem is the same

- if I copy the files to drive gradually, everything works until certain point... then only files in 1st level folders are shown... files in nested folders are not shown...

- it seems, that the problem is not MP3 file related... if I move "invisible" files to other working folder then they are shown...

I don't know, if there is any max number of folders limit...

Still everything works on 4 years old X3... :-/

It might not be the same issue but I found a specific album would not display at all no matter what I did. Suspect it was a metadata issue.

Try a different sourced version of an album and see if that copies and displays in iDrive. It seems 'finickier' than the idrive on my F15.

Fat32 should be fine, as mp3 files shouldn't hit the file size constraint.

I use exfat for playing video files - mp4/mkv as these can be >4gb, plus the source USB drive is bigger too (>32gb)

So I tried almost everything, and it seems, that iDrive can't access more than certain amount of files/folders.

Disappointing if that's the case. You would expect that the hard-drive capacity would be the limiting factor.

That said, I have noticed it takes an age, minutes rather than seconds, for album lists to be displayed, as though it's having to build a new cache of tracks with every vehicle start. Maybe that's why they limit the number of files/folders? A more efficient approach would be to sort the indexing and have a non-volatile cache, but hey it's BMW idrive 7!

Need to determine if it's files or folders that's the limiting factor. If it's folders then a workaround could be to group all tracks in a single folder or related folders. If the metadata is good it should sort itself out.

If the limit is files then we are kind of stuffed other than removing redundant files like folder covers etc.

Further update...

Number of files seems to be the limit... any file over about 15000 won't be probably displayed...

... but I tried to use an old USB hub, at it works... so I spread the files on two disks and now I can access all of them... hurray!

Crazy solution... :-/
