I've got a hissing from my motor... I presume a boost leak

Well, today I noticed a new noise coming from my motor, directly connected to the boost levels. I presume it's a small boost leak, as I have no codes, and even romping on it I didn't get any underboost code. It's really just a prominent hiss, and I presume it's a leak somewhere. I guess I'll be checking the inter cooler connections first- are there any other high probability areas to cehck before I pay a shop to smoke test the entire thing?

Why do you say "directly connected to boost levels?" Just a WAG, but I would think any boost leak loud enough to hear would be accompanied by big clouds of black smoke out the tailpipes and enough error codes to light up your scanner like a Christmas tree.

I suppose a tiny one might make like a whistling sound somehow. I use a water/meth port connected to regulated air pressure to pressurize the intake when playing with boost stuff.

Just that, I hear it with boost. It's JUST louder than the spool noise from my deleted x5, which is why I noticed it. Cruising throttle, no noise, but give it a but of gas, and feel the torque building, and the noise builds as the boost/ torque does. Not noticeable more smoke than normal operation. Smokes at full throttle but not noticeably in other situations.

If you have an air compressor and basic mech skills you can rig a setup like I describe above for less than any shop will charge to even look at it.

Your guess might be right, but still not sure why you don't get underboost and potentially related codes set. -edit- sorry I just assumed you weren't seeing codes because it wasn't mentioned. I'd scan it before doing anything else.

I had some hissing a while back on my 335d. It turned out to be the cold side charge pipe had popped off the charge cooler just a bit. Popped it back on and went about my business. Easy place to check first.

So, in looking at the pipe connections, my red lower hose on the turbo side is covered in oil, and the top of the intake side hose is totally torn. That's definitely the new leak, the drivers intake charge piping.

Long story short, I'm towing my drift car 70 miles today. I'm getting a new BMW pipe, for a whopping $383, and it has the same warranty as FCP has. So I'll keep the original box, buy the fix kit from ATM for this particular hose, and then repair it. I'l,l return this one for my money back, hopefully.

The turbo side is an issue, because I dn't think the Forge aftermarket one will fit. Forge told me it wouldn't. So... Do I buy a $250 oem hose, or do I upgrade the inter cooler with the ATM unit, and get an upgraded hose with that.....

I might see if they're into sponsorship or anything of the sort. I've got lots of space to put stickers and rep a company on my drift car, and it gets a lot of pictures taken of it!
