2020 Order Submitted - 40i

Hello G05 forum, long time forum member, largely residing in the E90 to F80 subdomains and will be joining the ranks here sometime in the next 6-8 weeks.

This afternoon I submitted my order for a 2020 with production # assigned and scheduled for build week 32 – which I’m told could potentially move up now that it's marked for a customer. Brought a good friend along with me to get a second opinion on color/trim choices, which was helpful for sure on the exterior decision.

This X5 will be destined for a life of self-driving to the best of its abilities in NYC metro traffic daily for the next three years, with scattered semi-wilderness road-trips 3-4 times a year. Kicking that cycle off with – a hopeful Performance Center Delivery and 900 mile drive back home and then – a 1,300 miler in mid fall.

I’ll do the PCD as long as my schedule allows and reliant on it being scheduled before early/mid September.

Spec:
Arctic Grey
Coffee Extended
Matte Anthracite Poplar
20” 740M
ZMP/ZDY/ZLS/ZPP/some other small stuff

A few thoughts on the spec decisions today:

Basically, Coffee leather was the lone survivor. I can't do very light interiors (I do love the Ivory though), and decided 2 years ago that the next one wouldn't have black guts. I might have taken the chance on Cognac, but it’s no longer an option. If Tartufo were still around the car most likely would’ve been Mineral White on Tartufo…but oh well, there will always be a next car.

Was all over the place on exterior color. Considered Mineral White, Pyrite Brown (not available on 2020), Carbon Black, and both Greys. White and Carbon black were cut off when Tartufo disappeared. No pyrite for 2020. I’ve always appreciated the ease of maintenance and well kept appearance of previous grey cars over time. No problem here.

Honestly, Graphite Grey looks like it might go better with the Coffee interior than Arctic does. I really like Arctic in the wild though for some reason, so that's my choice. In comparing swatches in the sunlight of the two greys laying across the Coffee leather sample, the pure grey of Graphite went very well as opposed to the slight blue present in Arctic. I’m rolling with Arctic though, it is just a hair different than most other grey-scale cars you see, but it is blend-in enough to disappear in traffic. Only committed to the car for a 3 year lease, so if it ends up not being my favorite, no worries.

20” wheels – if I could get the M sport pkg with the 19” wheels that would’ve been my choice. I did add the M brakes as I had to do the 20” either way, but I’ve been looking for a bit softer ride in my next daily. The 20” will give the best ride quality of my options on this front.

No air suspension. For real BMW, do something to ensure your dealerships have some damn cars in the demo and service fleets with these big risk items on board. How can the consumer be expected to take a chance checking this box and getting delivered a car they hate the road feel of? I just couldn’t do it. Adaptive M it is. If I could’ve gotten a 20 minute test drive in a car equipped with this, I may have added the option.

Decided not to do acoustic glass spur of the moment. I don’t know the benefit I’ll get with it, and every X5 I’ve been in is fairly quiet on its own. I usually drive with my window cracked anyway, so this was a late scratch. Thought about this on my whole drive to pick up a friend and then to the dealership, with my window cracked open. For 300 miles or so today.

If B&W and Skylounge were available a la carte, I’d have done both. I couldn’t justify adding the Exec pkg for $4,500 in order to add B&W for an additional $4,200. I don’t like soft-close doors and didn’t want the side window shades. Easy decision here.
As a hypothetical; B&W at 4k and Skylounge at 1k probably sees me check both boxes. Alas, not the case. For somewhere around $2,500 I could have a very very nice upgrade done to the audio system if I find it necessary after delivery, and still have saved quite a sizeable chunk of change.

Alright, I’ve written more than enough here. Will post in this thread as I get production status updates.

That's great timing... I submitted an order for a 40i on 4/17 but it is still at "Scheduled for Production".

Awaiting Carrier Assignment now, let's hope these EPA and CARB holds go quickly for all of us impatient consumers.

My car took more than a week to get from SC to Delaware after the carrier was assigned. Drove me nuts. Your build happened really fast, but don’t count on the transport to also be lightening speed!

If you want to see a really funny graphic about my car’s journey, look up the thread on how slow the windows roll. Thanks toMarty in Bgm. So so funny.

Car only needs to be assigned a carrier to cross the street, hopefully. I'm trying to do a PCD on it - but they won't even begin scheduling touchpoint until the EPA/CARB holds are released.

There's still some chance I'll be able to get the X5 before September is here. If I go another 2 weeks with no PCD reach-out, I'll probably request my dealership have the car sent to them - then I will be subject to the shipping conundrum.

And that graphic representation of BMW logistical efficiencies is just hysterical, thanks for pointing me there!
