Ordered first BMW now w/ second thoughts...
Hi guys, my first post after months of reading through all the amazing info, thoughts, and pics from you all. Really appreciate this site and all of you
After years of driving economically and dreaming of a BMW, I finally pulled the trigger and placed an order for a 2019 X3 m40i last week - phytonic blue, cognac interior, dark oak wood trim, executive/premium, DA, DA+, adaptive m suspension, HK, heated front/rear, acoustic glass, shard for just under $60k out the door (including tax). Worked pretty hard to get there, likely annoyed a couple CAs in the process..but I’m so excited, build date July 13...and then I stumbled onto here and saw the MY2020 updates. I had been searching and shopping for over a month in the Chicago area, and knowing that MY2020 was arrive the corner, I was a bit nervous. Every CA I asked said there were no major updates planned, and I assumed them to be true (my mistake?) as the MY19 really only had the M steering wheel the MY2018 should’ve had. Given their reassurance, I went ahead with the order. Now I see all these likely updates in the Australian catalog, and I’m stuck in a spot where I don’t know whether to continue with my build, or just wait for the new model. I agree with previous posts about how I can’t keep waiting for the newest updates, because then I’ll never have a car, but the increase in hp, new seats, new steering wheel, and ID7 all seem like significant changes that would be worth the wait. I figure I probably won’t be able to get the incredible deal I got before (nearly 18% off MSRP), but anyone have experience buying right when a new MY was released? Were you able to get any discounts also or should I be expecting to pay full MSRP? This is my first real purchase and while I would like to have the most up to date car, my budget was $65k max. Thanks so much for your thoughts and look forward to spending much more time on here |

The MY2020 X3 is supposed to come with iDrive 7, which is big. Some people really like that, while others think it'll be buggy. However, ID7, unlike ID6, supposedly has an option for OTA updates, and so that might mitigate any issues.
Note that MY2020 production should be starting in August. It'll probably be less than a month from your current build date. |

If I were you I would definitely wait until the 2020 specs are confirmed before going forward for all of the reasons you mentioned in your post. The resale value of a 2019 will be significantly less than a 2020 already, it will be even worse if the 2020 has all of those upgrades. Sounds like you may already have buyer's remorse, and you don't even have the car yet.
You don't have to take the 2019 you ordered. If you decide after finding out what the 2020 upgrades are that you would be satisfied with a 2019 after all, then you will be able to find plenty of leftover 2019's at significant discounts as soon as the 2020's arrive. Also, when I ordered my 2019 in September 2018, I was still able to get about 10% off MSRP. Good luck! |

I also pissed at BMW to make changes in the middle of it. I think those should be done during facelift.
I just got my 2019 mid April, now 2020 will have so.many improvement. last time when I buy my E90, I got burn too. I got the first year if E90 as soon as it came out, but that 3.0NA (330) setup only last 1 year. next year they put in 3.0turbo and 2.0turbo. So the 330 I got all the sudden is at par of 328 next year. why change engine the very next year the brand new model is released??

I think you'll see the MY20 X3 specs shortly and like the MY20 X4, I think there will be more than the normal year-over-year changes. For the X4, my exact same MY20 build comes out to cost slightly less than the MY19 model, even with all the changes. Add to that that your X3 will be a year old within a few weeks of you receiving it.
Personally, I'd wait if you can. I know that's easy to say, but if you've waited this long, I think you may be disappointed not wait a day or two longer.

Thank you guys so much! Again, I appreciate all the info on this site; you guys are so much more well informed and helpful than the CAs I’ve encountered, all who told me there would be no changes.
It’s crazy that they are paid to know this kind of stuff, and they failed me. I think I will cancel my order, only issue is I’ve paid the $1,000 deposit and looking up on MyBMW, the car has entered the production queue...I’m gonna to call up the CA I ordered with and should be able to get my deposit back right? Like other forum posts, I haven’t signed for the car and if I’m not receiving it, worst case scenario, I tell AMEX about it and I’ll get that money back? I might lose that dealership, but there’s at least 6 others that will want my business.. Last edited by Nathanmlee; 06-29-2019 at 05:01 PM.. |

The facelifted X3 should be a MY22 (year 5 of the product cycle), and will likely be released sometime in calendar year 21.

The next model year is always going to have the latest and greatest. At some point you have to bite the billet and jump in or you’re never going to have anything.
I took delivery of my m40i about a month ago, and while I’m bummed about the 25hp increase with the 2020 model, but I really hate the new instrument cluster with those weird semi-circles for mph and rpm going in different directions. Just a terrible design if you ask me. To each his own but there will always be a small pang of regret with anything you buy today. Stuff changes too darn fast. |

Definitely, I do agree...the backwards tachometer is weird and at some point I need to just bite the bullet (and so does my wife, who is tired of how much time I spend on this forum, the BMW site, and cars in general lol), but things that make a big difference to me are the new ID7 with the ability of OTA updates, Live Cockpit Pro and new seats. Regardless, I let my CA know, who was not happy, and said “we’ll talk Monday.” In the end, I just want to be happy that my hard earned money was spent getting what I want. Thank you guys for all the responses! Love this community!

For me the dash was a big deal. My 4 series looks exactly like my 2013 3 series did inside. The current X3 dash, looks almost identical (yes it's digital and touch, but cosmetically it looks very similar). For me, the new Live View Dash and larger touch screen with ID7 gives the car a fresher look (at least it does in the X5 I played with). So when I put my order in, I specifically asked the dealer to request a build week in September based on discussions with BMW UK dealer assist. I'd absolutely lose $1000 over it. Heck I did that very cancel/lose deposit thing on my 3 to add HK and Adaptive headlights back in 2013.
I'd not wait 2 years for the next model year, but one or two months more for the latest dash? Absolutely. |

Just remember these two points. You're the consumer. It's your money and your decision.
We're lucky in that consumer protection laws require deposits to be refundable, so no chance the OP loses his $1000.
