TPMS oddness

After 7 months and 5500 miles I checked the tyre pressure yesterday with a trusted gauge and realised the dealer had set the pressure for a fully loaded car.. I decided to reduce pressure down about 2 bar per axle in an attempt to reduce centre tyre wear but maybe preserve edge wear.

Even though they were above the minimum label pressure I got a tyre warming when leaving work tonight? It’s been warm in the UK today and a reset resolved but odd.

You have to RESET TPM after you change tire pressure. Your car did it's job by notifying you the tire pressure went down.

Why didn’t it do that on the way to work this morning ?

Because depending on the TPM system in your vehicle it may require a decent drive before it calculates that the tires have lowered pressure. In the USA we have TPM sensors. In some countries they do not use TPM sensors so they use wheel rotation to determine if the tires are low.

Just reset your TPM and everything will be fine

Fair enough, odd though as I drove to work 24 miles this morning and no issues, car sat for 10 hours restarted and warning came up.

Have reset and hope no more gremlins

That’s normal, when I fitted my winter wheels without TPMS sensors it would take 10-20 miles before the warning would appear.

Thanks for confirming

The ride in comfort mode with the 21” wheels was already good IMHO but dropping 0.2 bar/3PSI has further improved ride and steering

Have you selected what tyres you have within Idrive?

I have and my screen like yours also tells me what the front and rear pressures should be, which changes as the temperature goes up!

So just to confirm have you set to 2.4 (F) and 2.6 (R)?
Shouldn’t it be 2.2 and 2.4 for partial load?

Interested what people use to check pressure and inflate with, as I have a digital inflator that then doesn’t seem to tie in with what TPMS says.

So contemplating getting a new Ring RTC6000 cordless

I had been driving for 30 mins in the heat hence the tyre temps. On my digital gauge I set them to 2.3 and 2.5. Experience of SUVl tyres they tend to wear edges faster so wanted to try slight above partial load but still lower than the delivery pressures of full load !

Fair enough, makes sense. Discovered myself that mine were inflated pretty high, but then also heard that higher inflation = better tyre life so who knows

Good spot, for some reason my dealer had set the tyre to a Special Authorisation size, maybe whoever did the PDI only noticed it displayed rear tyre sizes and gave up.

It seems the partial load setting on the 21” tyres, it changes its mind what the ideal pressure should be though, the sticker says 2.2 front 2.4 rear. You will see from the pics it suggests more, then after a drive changes recommended pressure again

I only weigh 72 KG so nothing to do with a heavy load

I think the change is related to the tyre temperature, so it’s effectively a ‘live’ figure.

The figures on the sticker by the door are for cold tyres, so I’d expect them to be higher after a run

I don’t understand why the recommended pressures would change, I get the tyre pressure would change though

Mine was the same, dealer hadn't set to the 21"s
