Running In

The operators manual for my 330d says that the car needs 1200 miles of running in at less than 80mph and 3500rpm.

I've been following this as best as I am able. A few times over the limit and maybe a couple of kick downs as I overtake. It's taking a long time to get to the 1200!

Did everyone else run their car in? What are the longer term benefits of running in.

It's hard to get the auto gearbox (it has so many gears to choose from) to move the revs around the range, 2500 is the average rpm. Has anyone else taken any steps to make sure the engine is allowed to run at a good range of rpm?

Is running in something that pays off over 10 years or 2 years?

Sounds like you are doing a good job of following the engine break-in instructions. I can't speak to the automatic transmission issue - it is definitely much easier with a standard trans. to vary the revs.

I was told 2000 km and 4000 rpm - no speed limit, just rpm limit - at the factory delivery center. I hit 2000 km within 4 days of getting the car so I was able to really enjoy the Autobahn after that.

Long term benefits include not sucking oil like crazy. Less wear and tear and mechanical failures. I would just keep it in normal Drive mode until 1200 miles. Then put it in Manual mode and have fun ^^

I guess there's some delayed gratification here - get the car, love it - drive sedate for 2 weeks with the occasional blip past slower moving traffic - then 2 weeks later drop it into manual mode and go for it. Like having the car again?

i have a 320d m sport and the dealer said just drive it like you drive normally, bmw engines are made well these days he said, well i am 23 so the 400 rpm didnt take long to hit but i dont pull the hammer down a lot thou, if u worry to much about breaking it in, u wont enjoy it

The dealer's is contradicting the owner's manual then there's a whole page dedicated to running in.

My dealer said the same though.
