Is this space normal?

Is this weather strip gap/space normal? I have 2019 BMW X3 40i, Black Sapphire. I was cleaning the top today and noticed this ½ inch gap on the weather stripping. I took the pic standing on the rear wheel, looking at the passenger side.

I have owned many vehicles with moon/sunroof I have never seen a gap on the weather stripping.

You made me look ... and I have a similar gap at the same location you describe. Mine is closer to 1/4 of an inch though.

Let's see if anyone can offer an explanation of why its that way?

I had a similar gap - I was able to close the gap by pushing the weather stripping

Did you pull it along while it was closed, or opened a bit? I just tried while closed and no luck even moving it a bit.

The driver side has no gap; passenger side is what you see in the pic.

What a head scratch-er...

I know for a fact is the rubber is not designed to be water tight, but designed to slow down the water intake rate, but having a 1/4 inch gap defeats the purpose I would think.

I moved it with the roof closed, i used some soft edged tongs to move/stretch it along, starting from the other side and working back towards the gap.
Then again with tweezer to pull the rubber over the plastic notch

Our 2018 has this 1mm gap. My wife is driving our 2019 so I'll look later tonight. It appears this area is designed well for drainage on the RealOEM site - https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=54_0562 , so other than appearance and the potential for allowing larger debris into the space, seems shouldn't cause any major issues? Might be reasonable to at least run it by your Service Advisor next time you're out that way.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. My 2013 X1 had clogged drainage tubes. I found out the hard way. The next morning when I was going to work....water that was sitting on the tray and it rushed into the cabin. Not fun.

Maybe they expect that to let make-up air in to facilitate drainage or just a place for evaporation to go. Not air or water tight on purpose. Seems everyone has a gap of some sort there.

I have the exact same thing on the passenger side as the OP. Mine didn't want to easily slide back in place but I'll try again later.

Our 2019's gap is slightly less, about 0.5mm. Suspect a bit of ventilation for added drying as sor suggests may not be a bad idea.

I have a 2019 and have a similar gap on the driver side. When I was washing the car a couple weeks ago, I noticed it. I've not tried to adjust it, but I was going to bring it up to service department on the next trip in.

As luck would have it...I picked up a nail on my 668 miles old tires....so going to the dealer today to get it fixed. Will bring up the "gap" issue....lets see what they say....

OK, just got back from the dealer...so a couple of updates.

First off, I am driving a loaner...had to leave M40i at the dealer.

Tire - Remember that nail I picked up--I mentioned above? RFT cant be repaired, has to be replaced. Dang thing has less that 700 miles, almost no wear and already have to replace it.

Gap - service manager stated that some gap is normal, mine is a bit excessive. Will take a look and check.

Wireless Charger - it overheats. It has reached up to 104 F (40 C) right in the center, where it makes contact with the phone. It triggers a phone shutdown due to overheating, Will check to see what's going on.
