28 MPG at 80 MPH - Not bad at all
Did my first real road trip with my 40i. 4K miles on it, so well broken in. Averaged 28.1 MPG and drove at 80 MPH most of the way. That is really solid and much better than my F15 ever did.

What drive mode? I’m getting 19 in comfort on the highway about 75 mph in my 40i. Was there any tailwind or downhill travel? Hoping it gets better after it’s broken in.

So ~600 miles range. Really good for a vehicle with so much frontal area, weight and performance. It means I will hardly miss the Cayenne’s 26g tank if I go with the 40i. Thanks!

That's way higher than I see. When cruising at 80 or 85 I only get a hair over 20 mpg. That's average over hundreds of miles in various wind conditions. I've got 6,000 plus miles on my X5 now.
If indeed you are getting 28 mpg, enjoy it! |

I am still in break-in, 40i, and while I told my dealer that the ECO button will never see my fingerprint, I have tried it and will be using it on long boring drives. Here was a test and it is rather impressive:
- open road, daytime, ACC at around 130km/h (80mph); actual GPS speed was around 127km/h, but close enough - start with about 40km (25 miles) in COMFORT, settled into 10.5 L/100km (22.4 US mpg) - for the next 40km (25 miles) switched to ECO, settled into 8 L/100km (29.4 US mpg) ... and I didn't notice any driving or comfort differences at all Oh, my car is white i.e. reflecting most other light, so that might account for some of that efficiency :-P. That ECO mode is magic!

Agreed. But on a long boring highway, it seems to be magic. Unexpected.

I'd love to see that as well, but not stock. Maybe by coding at some point in the future.

We averaged 25 mpg on our trip to Dallas. 4 adults and rear cargo full, with the AC on high. Drove between 90-100mph on the interstate. Was in stand still traffic for about 25 min. I'll take it!

Thats amazing! My 2015 X5d gets 31 mpg highway at 75-80 mph 90 miles of highway driving roundtrip to work and back. I was hesitant to get the new X5 with the gasoline engine because I wasnt sure of the mpg on the highway but it seems like a great engine and I will only need to fill it up once a week like the X5d. I will order one for next spring. I went ahead and purchased the X5d at end of lease last month but will finance it for a bit and trade it in. Thanks again for this info!

I got 16.5 in town today. Really disappointed with the lack of economy with this thing. I could understand if it was the 50i but I expected better from the 40i.

My commute is 85% highway and I do use the eco mode often. I routinely get 28mpg round trip. When I add in other city driving intermittently like the grocery store, picking up the kids, making my way to soccer practices, it goes down to 25-26 combined. I think it’s amazing. I had a merc GLE 400 with the twin turbo engine prior to this and my average mpg never went above 22 on the same driving route.

In all seriousness, a recent 1000 mile roadtrip averaged 24.5 mpg in Comfort mode. Haven't tried Eco for any extended period, but will do next month. I have a 40i with 21" wheels, premium gas, 4 passengers, and luggage. |

I tried Ecco mode on our last 2200 mile road trip. It isn’t bad with ACC on. I really couldn’t tell. Ecco mode without running ACC feels like a wet sponge on the pedal. My wife drove in Ecco mode on our trip and she still thought it had a lot of power. Oddly enough when she was driving and I took it out of Ecco mode to comfort mode, she became aggressive with passing every thing????

You're right! That's a much better configuration. And mine is loaded down with all those minerals in the white paint. Crap, I should have skipped the minerals ...
