Located in SoCal, we are fortunate enough to be able to visit BimmerFest year after year. This year was no exception, but what made it so much more special, is the fact that this time we not only presented our project at the Battle of the Bimmers show, but also took the same car to the Track surrounding the main event.
At the Battle of the Bimmers: For those who are not familiar with California Speedway, it is an amazing road course consisting of a nice long stretch of open road, banked NASCAR turn 1/2 and some challenging infield tuns. The track is the PERFECT place not to only practice, but also test out your car (and of course our tunes). We were registered to run our car only on Sunday, but had a chance to enter for a few quick hot laps on Saturday...so of course I took that opportunity. That day I was running an experimental 25psi flash that was built to find the limits/chocking point of the factory setup. Since I didn't expect to run that day, I left my laptop at the office so instead of entering the track with a well tested stage 2.5 flash, I was forced to run the way higher output version against my own good judgement. On the track, I was lined up after a M4 Competition. At first, the car ran amazing, with more then enough power to stay on the M4's rear end (I don't like to run Open Pass groups with my project cars), until I came out of turn 18 at full boost and the car threw Drivetrain Mulfunction. I coasted off the track, restarted the motor, and all I got in return was a bunch of smoke....so I knew exactly what happened. Right then and there I knew that the little turbo that feeds the B58 was not very happy, so unfortunately I was out for the day. I got the car towed back to the shop and pulled the old turbo out. And this is what I found: Lucky me, I had a backup turbo laying on the shelves at the shop so the evening was dedicated to swapping out the old one for something new. After the swap was finished, I went back to a 22psi/stage2.5+ version with a bump in timing since for track days I run a mix of 1 gallon e85 and 3 gallons of VP109. Next morning we were off to the track again, this time with a backup car (just in case), a 2010 M3 It's great to talk to other drivers at the track and see the look on their faces when you show them your garage and tell them you are running the GroceryGetter Wagon as your track car and keep the M3 as a backup vehicle. So time finally came to get on the track and see what this car can do. My previous track days at Cali Speedway were done in a F10 550i followed by a 800hp F10 M5. The M5 was quick, but grip was difficult and being a fat boat, I was only able to get 2m05s around that track. Not the best time but still pretty respectable for that car. After the first session, still warming up and trying to figure out the F31 handling characteristics, I was able to land at 2m02s flat. Not bad at all for a wagon! Now for the second session, I knew I could get a bit better time with a bit earlier braking and smoother turn-ins. 3rd lap the Pilot Super Sports got a bit too sloppy and I nearly landed the car in a wall at 100mph, though even that didn't stop me. After a quick pit-stop to assess the damage, I was back on the track. One easy lap to cool everything down and then I went for it. I pushed the car hard to over 150mph on the back straight and 125mph on the bank corner. By the end of the session, the pads(DS2500) were trashed and PSS felt like butter, but pulling into the pits, I got my fastest track lap results: 1m58s! Not bad at all for 4300lb projectile setup as a daily! For those who are interested, here are some unedited (long and dirty) results. The logs looked great and car performed amazing! And on top of that, look at those temperatures. The trans and engine oil temps are perfect, and after upgrading the fender mounted intercooler heat exchanger, our IAT were only 10C above the ambient. https://datazap.me/u/missiontuning/w...ata=1-25-26-33 Vehicle setup: -2017 340ix Sedan mated with F31 sear section. Final result a fully Cali-legal F31 340ix in beautiful San Marino Blue -Koni Yellow paired with H&R sport -H&R Sway bars, front and back -M2 Calipers -M4 master cylinder with custom coding on DSC module for better brake characteristics -Castrol SRF fluid and steel lines. DS2500 pads -Full M3 LCI front end -Custom Side radiator to help IAT -100lb+ extra sound deafening as I hateee noises -BavSound Full speaker upgrade -PSS 265/35/19 on 437m -meth injection (30% water with CM5 nozzle) -custom HPFM -reinforced xdrive and front diff. We should be back to the track on the June 8th with better brakes and CUP2 tires in attempts to get into the low 1:5x. Some more pictures of the car at the track: Last edited by MissionPerformance; 06-03-2019 at 11:53 AM.. |

Thanks Alex! Good post and great info!
On your set up, “reinforced xdrive and front diff.” are you running auto or manual? If auto, Stage 2 trans tune? -Custom Side radiator to help IAT Is this something that you can provide more info on? -HPFP Details or eta . Would love to run some E30 or E50 |

Since the car has full F80 front end, I was able to stick in the F80 front fender cooler. With a bit of pipe modifications, it looks and fits like OEM but has much higher surface area and provides better cooling. HPFP we are running now is a modified version of the OEM one. It is better then the OEM for sure, but still not the custom pump we are working on. That will come later. Thank you, it really is! Its a blast, though only downside of it is the fact that I can not add any down force on the rear end. At nearly 130mph on the bank, I'm getting a bit of lift on the rear section and too afraid to push it any faster without any aero mods. |

Sweet! Y'all need to get a booth next year so we can find you and you can flash our cars on site in the in field parking lot and we can test drive them on the track then either keep the tune or return back to stock for no charge.

Really interested in specifics on details on reinforcing the xDrive.
I'm confident in the B58 and ZF8 with these tunes at 400 whp, but I can't find much in the way of details on xDrive capabilities or ways to improve on it to handle it. Thanks
