Mods for 440i -- some guidance for B58 newb

Hi all -- picking up a new 2019 440i and thinking of doing a couple of mods.

Asides from doing a BM3 and downpipe. Are any other mods necessary? Are stock plugs ok (what is stock gap?), or do we need to get new ones? Is there a benefit to changing the exhaust/mufflers for power or is it sound only? what about filter or intake? Want to keep it simple.

Our our N55 X4 M40i has a S2 BM3, afe filter, downpipe, intercooler, ngk plugs and a chargepipe and came from factory with M performance exhaust.

Start with the basics intake, exhaust system, tune, turbo. Each of the components has been mentioned in this forum.

trying to keep the car safe for the 35k miles i'll put on it. With the N55 on S2, colder plugs, chargepipe and intercooler are must have mods. Just trying to make 400whp safely with minimal mods.

So just about any stage 2 flash tune will get you there, a bit more, or darn close. As an example I have a Mission Performance Stage 2 tune along with their Tranny tune, and that's about it other than a couple gallons of E85. I'm putting down right about 400 to the wheels...easy breezy. And have the ability to simply drop 91 into the tank if I don't want to deal with the E85.

Unlike the N55 platform there is no need for chargepipe or intercooler upgrades to hit a safe 400 to the wheels. And as for an exhaust, really no power to be gained unless it's in conjunction with a downpipe. Sparkplugs: some (like me) have oem plugs gapped to .022 but opinion on that seems to be somewhat subjective.

That's what I was after....a set it and forget it safe and very drivable 400 to the wheels (I have probably 10k very hard miles on my car and it has not skipped a beat)

I see you are in SoCal if you are anywhere near Huntington Beach, you are welcome to swing by and drive the car. While it looks like you will be going BM3, it'll give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

think you could show me a thread where intakes are dyno'd and compared. Thanks!!

y'all might want to be a bit more helpful if someone shows up and doesn't know something about a car.

thank you for the info!

there isn't e85 close enough to warrant.

I really would like to not have to touch the plugs if I didn't have to, as if it's anything like the N55, the back 2 plugs require removing the entire cowl (which blows).

Is there a panel filter replacement that seems superior on this model? afe or k&n or other?

i stuck with minimal mods on this build.

stage 1 tune for more power
muffler delete for more noise
coilovers so the car looks good

aaand done. i'd recommend that path to anyone. can replace the muffler delete with res delete if that's more your speed. Then you'll have a nice fun bmw for under $2k that doesn't shout "modified." If you just do springs you could do it for under $1k even.

Ended up with the following mods on my 2 week old car:

exterior:
removed xdrive logo
swapped black 440i logo
black mirror light overlay
front reflector smoked corners
19" m4 replica competition wheels with Michelin PS4
matte black m performance type front splitter
carbon fiber m4 style mirror covers
carbon fiber M spoiler
carbon fiber diffuser
double walled 87mm exhaust black tips

engine:

evolution downpipe wrapped with inferno wrap
regapped stock plugs to .020
drop in afe filter
BM3 Stage 2

Pretty much done modding the car...figured I might as well do it all now if i'm gonna eventually do it. lol

in 3 years all of this stuff will be FS fyi.

I'll post some pics later (still waiting on dealer to send me bumper tow hook cover --was missing on delivery)

BM3 + DP is all the engine mods you need (you might want to consider xhp or similar transmission tune in addition but not "needed")
Plugs ... only MP seems to think this is needed for his higher boost tunes
Exhaust .. mostly sound any 5whp more is not noticeable
Intake ... mostly done for sound

Simple ... Stage 1 .... if need for more power exists add DP ... even more torque needed ... add xhp .... anything else has less influence on the whp than the weather

No, you are fine with that.

Are stock plugs ok (what is stock gap?), or do we need to get new ones?

Yes, stock are okay and gap is .028. You may want to tighten the gap to .022-.023 due to higher boost and potential spark plug blow out.

Is there a benefit to changing the exhaust/mufflers for power or is it sound only?

Sound and prob. few hp.

what about filter or intake? Want to keep it simple.
I run stock but a lot of people like BMS and Dinan and Eventuri... and another I can't think of.

Sounds slow

Sounds slow

yes...quite.

BTW, I used to have 03 & 04 cobra KB 19psi and a 07 GT500 580whp stock supercharger. definitely miss 600whp.
