What do you rev up to in 1st

Just got my 330, MT, SP last week. After a week of driving I'm still trying to figure out how to achieve a smooth transition from 1st to 2nd. It's been a little frustrating. What do you guys suggest I try?

Also, when shifting at any gear, the clutch begins to engage smoothly and linearly then all of a sudden it fully engages causing a very slight "bump" feeling. Is this due to the CDV?

Normal driving, just below 4K. Above that for more fun. Most of the time, I drive normal.

You just have to get your timing right... my 1st to 2nd goes fine and I just don't rush it. Put some pressure on the selector lever as you push in the clutch and it should slide right from 1 to 2 with a notchy feel then let up the clutch according to feel. Things should go smooth like this. The "bump" feeling is either you or there is some problem. My 3 has perfect clutch action, in my opinion. The CDV is something a lot of people blame sloppy shifting on.

when i want a very smooth shift from 1 to 2 i only rev up to right below 2k. this will cause you to be around 1k when you enter the 2nd gear so you'll have no push power but it's very easy to make it smooth that way.

Anywhere between 3,000-4,000 RPM's will get you into 2nd gear smoothly. Once, you've gotten the car broken in, anything above that will be quick and buttery.

Enjoy your new ride

I have been having the same problem. It's a matter of timing.

I agree that shifts into 2 above 3,000 rpm are smooth, below it is more of a hit and miss for me.

I'm not sure why you'd shift much earlier than that anyways

unless it's a shift into 6th on the freeway you shouldn't shift that early

For a smooth 1-2 shift, shift quickly if you're below 4k, but slowly if you're above it.

When you redline 1st and want to shift into 2nd, you have to drop by about 3000rpm for that same speed in 2nd. In order for there to be no jerk forward (ie, engage 2nd at too high an RPM for that speed), you have to slow down your shift so you catch 2nd at about 4000 rpm.

If you want to shift from 1st to 2nd at about 3500rpm in 1st, you only have to drop to about 2000 rpm in 2nd, so you have to shift much faster to rev match since that's only 1500rpm difference.

as said, it's all about the timing and how hard you're running.

EDIT: here's my previous thread on a similar topic.

I shift at 3K, try getting back on the throttle a bit quicker after you let the clutch engage completely.
