So what typical average RPM run at
Ok, maybe asked before.
But what do most guys cruise their E90s at during their daily drive ? I have had my 325 SE for about 10 days, and so should still be mixing the revs. But I find I float back to around 3,000 rpm on the highway cruising between 70 to 90 mph. Between 5, and 6th gears (and 4th for slow 50 to 60mph conditions) I naturally slip back to a typical 3,000 as being confortable. So I have to conciously drive in lower gear, or too high gear to mix it up at bit down to 2,500 rpm and 3,500 rpm cruising to help the engine break in. After the break in, I will still be driving the same way, at an average of 3,000 rpm, unless I am in a hurry or bad mood. |

I run lower at about 2500. But I'm on back roads, not a highway.

Around 2500-3000rpm on the motorway (basically whatever 6th gear will give me at any speed above 60mph), in town I will always try to keep the revs below 1500rpm when cruising along at 30mph, only changing down when I need to pick up speed.

When I release the beast it goes as high as 7000rpm for a moment until I reach the spead I want to cruise at then I relax the engine back abouts 2500rpm ~ 3000rpm. I don't release the beast that often.

If you ever drove the triptronic version of cars' you'll notice that during normal driving, the engine speed is right around 2k. That is until you push down on the accelerator pedal, where it forces a downshift. |

During break in, I avoided using the cruise altogether, and varied my rpm's between 2500 to 3000. Sometimes I would downshift to fifth and run in fifth for a short time before shifting back to 6th. If you can avoid long stretches of highway, that will work better for break-in.

I have step and typically run around 2500 or lower in D.
Highest that I've ever ran was only about 4200. In manual mode, I typically shift just the revs hit 3000.

I cruise at around 2500-3000. For passes I've taken it up to 5-6K.

Basically I found that if I "baby" the car (cruise at about 2k shift at about 2.5k) the gas mileage sucks, but I have no idea why. If I keep the revs a little higher when cruising 2-3k and shift at 3-3.5k) I get better average mpg. Anyone have any idea why?

For easy driving when others are in the car, I shift at 3K and usually cruise at 2K. When going up hills, I won't shift until 4K. I try to make the drive pleasant.
When others are not at the car, I shift at 5K to Redline, once the engine is warm, but still cruise around 2K. |
