Opinions on Lane Keeping Assistant?

I took my M4 in for service and was given a 2019 330i with 1,500 miles on it as my loaner. The car is great for what it is, but I nearly lost control the first time the Lane Keeping Assistant kicked in! It was totally unexpected!

I wanted your opinion on this feature. Personally it would drive me nuts! I tend to switch lanes without using the blinker if there are no other cars around or when cutting across lanes during spirited driving. Guilty as charged, typical BMW driver.

I turned off the feature, and it still corrects the steering. Not sure if it needs to be coded out, but I don't like it!

I think you can turn it off without requiring coding in iDrive. Others have posted similar surprise experiences though.

I know what you mean. Referenced it in a video... almost caused me a collision on the highway.

I turn it off whenever I'm on the highway, around town I don't mind so much.

But, yea I tend to switch lanes the same way as you, providing no one is near me!

Once it's off, it's off.. you have to hold the green circle for 3 seconds... I turn everything off!

Yup, I think so. Or, turn down sensitivity and turn off lane departure steering in individual.

What a dangerous feature to have by default, especially on loaners. If you need to make an emergency evasive maneuver you're not going to have time to turn on blinkers.

Might surprise you the first time. But once you know it, it is a nice feature. It surprised me how often I touched road markings. I keep lane better now. Lower sensitiveness can help because the system starts before you touched the lines.
Also not blocking your movement, just a minor try to correction which you can ignore and hold your steer wheel to make your move.

But, it also misinterprets sometime when there are double lines or shared bicycle lanes for example. Not to happy about that but the driver is certainly the boss when steering.

I think it is dangerous and I was able to turn it off in I drive on my loaner without coding. That is weird it still intervened after you turned it off. If you need to make an emergency maneuver it could cause an accident.

You don't have to push and hold the circle every time. You can set up an "Individual" setting and pick and choose what safety nannies you want on. In my wife's, the first thing she did after driving home from the dealership was turn off the steering intervention.

You should always have two hands on the wheel and always use turn signals even if there are no cars. If you don't use them when there are no cars, I know you probably don't use them most of the time anyway because it has to become a habit. If you have two hands on the wheel, LKA shouldn't ever feel dangerous.

BMW (and most other cars) have effectively removed any road feedback from the steering wheel so now when people feel artificial feedback they panic and have no idea what to do.

Yep. The force of LKA steering intervention is minimal and can easily be overpowered unless you're steering with one finger.

Glad I am not the only one who has switched this feature off. I had a Vauxhall Insignia that had lane departure warning and this was slightly more tolerable than the G20's controls.

as many have said, you can turn intervention to a lower setting, turn off completely (all systems) or create an individual setting.

green circle means all is turned on
red circle advises that at least one item has been disabled...

I keep the warning (vibration through the steering wheel) but have that on low and steering intervention off. You can configure it to your key and profile and the setting will stay the same every time you drive.

You can configure it easily (light feedback or all the way off), also why wouldn't you use turn signal all the time...?

Is LKA kind of like Tesla's 'autopilot'? I love the feature on my wife's Tesla, and it seems to be getting better. I used to have to take over once every 5 mins., now I can go about 10 mins. Or maybe I'm getting more tolerant of its indiscretions.

Yes! You know what else I don't like as well? How much it hurts when I stab myself with a knife, they definitely should make it like that by default, it's very dangerous too.

/s

If you follow the rules and use things correctly, like they were designed to be used, you won't have any problems. Driving without using your blinkers, EVEN if there aren't any cars around you, is dangerous and irresponsible. Driving aggressively and not following the rules is not something to be proud of and that's not what a BMW driver is like, so please don't generalize as well.

You can do whatever you like, but don't complain when you use something incorrectly and you don't like the consequences. However, that is just my opinion.

“I drive with one hand, I don’t use turn signals. What should I do?”
Wow. So those stereotypical BMW drivers that I don’t really see around here actually exist.

Seriously. I must be breaking the BMW stereotype. Courteous on the road and using turn signals even when I am alone on the highway.

LKA is fine. Already helped me once so it's worth it to me.
