X Line vs M Sport Design Wheel Arch Trim

Has anyone changed out their black plastic X Line wheel arch trim for the body colored M sport design trim after they bought their X Line X5? or for that matter, the Sill Cover too?

Have not, but should be fairly simple. The Trim pops right off.

Just go to body shop. Ask they to paint your xline trim to match car color . It should be cheaper and look no different.

Mieleo,
The black plastic trim is a different texture, its not smooth like the cars body. Interesting idea though, it might work, dunno. Actually, having a bit of texture after painting might look ok, it would certainly be a one off, eh? Would be the least expensive option since the M Sport trim would need painted anyway. Hmmmmmm.

Ok, who has the X Line and wants to try it and report back?

When comparing the two, just painting the black plastic wheel arches wouldn't give you the contour of the M Sports door sill. Same goes for wrapping. You'd have to buy at least the door sill and then not care that the bumpers are a bit diff.

Are you talking about the rocker? (panel under the doors that extends between the wheel arches)

Yes, the rocker panel. Its #1 in the RealOEM diagram in my first post below. To really tie it all in and get most of the M Sport look, you'd have to replace the wheel arches and the door sill (rocker panels)

I mean, getting the M Sport from the start would've been cheaper/easier but yes he would need the bumpers too alongside reflectors and some other bits.

The M Sport Design option is $5,850. Buying only the M Sport wheel arches and door sill (rocker panels) is $1,918 estimated from BMW. This assumes a few things...you don't mind swapping them out yourself, you don't actually want the other items in the M Sport Design option and some of the smaller clips, etc will transfer from the X Line to the M Sport parts. Or possibly you already own the X Line and would like to swap out these parts to get some of the aesthetics of the M Sport Design.

Door sill cover, primed left 51778099111.. .. $314
Door sill cover, primed right 51778099112.. $314

Wheel arch trim, left front 51778099123.. .. $148
Wheel arch trim, right front 51778099124.. .$148
Wheel arch trim, rear left 51778099121.. .. . $247
Wheel arch trim, rear right 51778099122.. .$247
Total parts unpainted.....................................$1,4 18

Painting (Estimated)......................................$ 500

Total (estimated)....................................... ...$1,918

$3,932 less than buying the M Sport Design option.

Possible?

If you already own the xline, makes sense...

On a different note, when we first spec'ed out ours, it was less than $1K when its all said and done (between xline and msport). I think msport included a lot of upgraded options we wanted that would of cost more if we added a la carte to the xline. it made more sense for us to get the msport.

^^ This

The price differential between the x line and the M-sport is huge until you factor in the things that come standard with M-sport that cost extra on the xline.

To anyone looking to buy and choosing the xline because of price, build out both trims spec'd exactly the way you want and you'll find the difference in price can get much narrower. If you buy an xline to save money and then try to make it look like an m-sport, I'd say you're better off buying an M-sport in the first place.

Otherwise, just enjoy the looks of the xline. Its a nice looking vehicle too.

BMWasia,
Thanks for posting your pix! How many miles have you put on your car since the paint job? How is it holding up in terms of chipping, flaking, etc? or is it too early to tell?

I’m at 900 km. Now done at 62 km. One month from now since the painting, I think you wouldn’t have a problem with the plastic trim, paint will definitely have good adhesion if done correctly. But about the grill It’s another story.
