Broken Front Strut Bump Stops
I just picked up my F90 CPO M5 with around 7k miles and I went to get the state inspection and the mechanic said both of my front bump stops were severely damaged.
1) What could cause this, other than the previous owner being a complete jacka$$ and catching air? Can serious potholes cause this? I'm in northern VA where they believe the roads should emulate the moon. 2) What is this going to cost me to fix? Will BMW NA cover it since they should've caught this during the CPO inspection. 3) Is there any risk to driving it around? I'm nervous about some rookie mechanic ripping apart my front end suspension, which is almost as awesome a thought as this issue to begin with. Before anyone asks, it wasn't me... I've launched it hard but that's about the extent of my "spirited" driving. |

Please show pics if possible. Reason I’m asking is that several others have had the transport blocks left in (temporary white plastic blocks in upper portion of springs) which is of course a massive ball drop considering the cost of PDI and that removing these is on a checklist. Make sure the “bump stops” the mechanic refers to are not being mistaken for something else. Either way, yes should have been picked up on inspection for sure. Good luck!

Lol, I guess, but not really... They left them in my car as well. I could pull them myself but made an appointment with the dealer so that I have a service record of this buffoonery.

Glad to help. Document everything so if your struts give out sometime in the future out of warranty you use this knowledge of what happened to make BMW replace them no charge. These blocks got missed by BOTH the initial PDI and then again at CPO inspection 7k miles later when the car was resold. I wonder if the poor sod who got out of the car at 7k miles did so because of issues with ride / handling - a few others have mentioned how handling / ride issues made them bring the car into the dealer only to find the same issue with shipping blocks left in. I am anticipating my delivery around mid July and you can be damn sure i'm gonna look real carefully after the dealer has "inspected" it. BMW is going to have to start leaving long red ribbons attached to all items that need to be removed (just like on aircraft) lol.

I'm more impressed that you drove 8k miles without noticing it felt like you're riding on rails!
