Surgeons: At the Edge of Life

Currently watching this on BBC 2, it really is incredible what surgeons do! The skill and knowledge they have, the steady nerve, the dedication and sacrifice they make, just makes most of us look like useless Apes!

One of tonight’s operations took 12 hours!! I feel exhausted after a 10-12 hour day driving around looking at peoples houses plus sitting at my computer, but to stand there cutting people open and cutting bits out of them, looking through a microscope, all while avoiding the tangled network of arteries and nerves etc. is just unbelievable!

Well worth a watch just to put your “stressful” job into perspective!

Surgeons and Hospital are the best medical insights programmes IMO. Quite incredible. Science, medical and cars are my favourite topics.

My wife prefers Made in Chelsea and X Factor. We don't watch much TV together

Same here, my wife seems to seek out the most rubbish programmes to watch! Eastenders, X factor, The Voice, Bake Off etc. Thankfully she goes to bed at 9pm so I can then watch some decent TV!

I have the same issue, she just watches utter shite and woe betide you if you dare to speak over the drivel, I just watch TV in my cupboard under the stairs instead.

It’s a really good programme. Just saw that surgeon episode this evening - he is quite an arrogant tool and deserved his 8 years inside. It wasn’t in the programme but even as he was being sentenced he was still at it -

He was led down to the cells halfway through his sentencing, after accusing the judge of "suppressing the truth" and being an "abusive, racist and terrible person". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...herts-46986199

The most remarkable episode was during the last series when the police were investigating a case of blackmail. Someone had visited a hooker and received a demand for £1k to keep quiet about it. The detective watching the drop off point for the ransom turned out to be the blackmailer and was arrested during filming! Probably not quite what Bedfordshire Police had in mind when they allowed the cameras in...

A couple of days before the blackmail victim had been to the police, this detective had run the victim’s number plate through the Police National Computer to get his address. Remarkable that he didn’t know that would leave a trail back to him!

Thoroughly recommend 24hrs in Police Custody. It’s always interesting.

I've got every respect for surgeons. And their teams. My missus had an eleven and a half hour cancer op back in 2015. I was knackered just waiting around London.

Their theater teams are worth a mention IMO. There were around ten of them working on my missus.

Indeed. The surgeon may be at the cutting edge, literally, but the expertise in the 'support' team is also huge.

Shows what a mixture of greed with a hint of desperation do to even the most intelligent of people.

Love 24 hours in Police custody. Great programme and the blackmail one was the best so far. Although the idiotic arrogant surgeon who committed insurance fraud was a close second.

Do any of you watch Ambulance that follows West Midlands Ambulance Service that's another great bit of programming. The episode of that when they went to that huge car accident in the Bham underpass was totally gut wrenching how these people work first on scene to something like that is just incredible.

2 of my friends are first response paramedics, one was caught up in a big car accident whilst he was off duty a couple of years back and suffered shock at something he would’ve taken in his stride on duty such was the nature of it.

He feels embarrassed about it to this day, his description of the events are horrific.
