Two weird issues in two days!

Yesterday I'm starting up my car, all set to pull it out of the garage. It's started and so I put my foot on the brake and shift it into drive (I've got steptronic). I'm in "D" and my car starts driving backwards as if it was in reverse, then quickly jerks and "leaps" forward. The warning sound goes off and there's a crazy illustration/warning message on the idrive screen that reads, "Transmission Failure". So I shift into park and turn the car off and start it again and it seemed fine for the rest of the day.

Then, today, I put the key fob in the slot, put my foot on the brake, and push the "engine start" button and nothing happened. I tried it twice more and still nothing. Finally, on the fourth shot, the car started and I get a "!" message on the center screen of the dash (where the outside temp reading is). The exclamation point "!" is inside of an animated gear.

I'm like...OK?

If that happened to me I'll be scared as sh..t. Take it to the dealership immediately and ask them to do a whole check of the computer and transmission.

sharp - take that thing in ASAP. That could be really bad. Best case is you might get stranded if it doesn't start.... worst case...well just imagine the tranny getting confused about which direction you should be going...

Keep us posted.

EDIT: the "!" symbol indicates a serious problem. Here's another idea - push your BMWAssist button and ask them if the diags are being transmitted. I believe they will do that - and then the dealer can tell you how serious the problem is (maybe) and give you some advice. Either way - take it in.

I would stop by the dealership and have them read the codes. It happende to mine twice in the past 8 months. If when re-started, the warning disappears, you are probably OK, but it is good to have it on record with the dealership.

I wouldnt worry about it....I mean, it is a BMW....

...just kidding

I dont think it will shift into the wrong gear while driving, there have to be precautions to prevent that. You should take it in at "your ealiest convinience.
