Why I'm waiting for Model Year 2020

Just thought I'd list out reasons I personally am holding off on an X7 purchase until MY2020. May be other benefits I'm not thinking of too.

1. Let BMW work out 1st year production kinks, figure out what can be improved. (always happens with 1st year models that are revamped, much less 1st year of brand new production models)

2. New M50i engine available with 70 more horsepower. (although I'll likely still order 40i)

3. New exterior color choices coming. (although I'll probably stick with Mineral White)

4. New interior leather options coming. I'll probably be getting one of the new upcoming "Full Merino Leather" options, either all black, or Amarone/Black.

5. New interior trim options coming.

6. Hoping for production quality control increases for seating. (see threads on "leather seat wrinkles", less egregious in X7 than X5)

7. Hopefully laser light production supply resolved by then and available. Bonus if also available for 40i.

8. Another bonus if laser light de-tuning issue in USA resolved by then. (unlikely--has to do with US DOT laws/rules)

9. Hopefully multiple BMW Connected/iDrive/Wi-Fi hotspot/etc software/tech issues resolved by then, BMW should be learning from issues with both X5 and X7. (note: hopefully also resolved with software updates for MY2019 owners, but just in case any require new hardware, MY2020 should already come with it, instead of retrofit)

10. I think new Mercedes GLS release in MY2020 will get a lot of attention and buyer demand. Hoping that translates into more X7 discounts and more amenable BMW sales agents.

11. There is a mental perception of owning a "2020" BMW, vs "2019", particularly later down the road for resale to a prospective buyer. Kind of like saying you own a "2010" model year car, vs "2009". It's not just another year, it's a car from the current decade vs. the previous decade.

12. More of a long shot, but possibility of MY2020 incorporating new tech like 5G for the Wi-Fi hotspot, lidar, remote parking

13. Hoping for new wheel/tire options, including non-runflat tires. Right now there's just not a lot out there for 21" and 22" wheels.

14. Other new standard features and options that will definitely be coming, but as of yet are unknown.

Just me personally, but to me it's worth it to wait for 4-5 months for these 14 reasons. Sure, some of them are speculation or just hopes. I may have forgotten other things that are coming. And of course, the down side is the inevitable MSRP pricing increase for the next MY, and that you lucky schmoes get to own and drive your X7 now.

Flame away.

Nothing to flame - I could have written that post myself...

I'm in the "fortunate" situation that I could not get a new vehicle RIGHT NOW because my leases on my current two vehicles does not expire prior to February 2020. In regards to the X7, this is just perfect timing.

In order to make me REALLY happy, there would be a 10% discount and the mentioned laser lights available. I'm also eyeballing the new interior colors. My current favor build is an xLine in Sapphire Black with the all-black wheels and blue M-brakes. The partially blue laser lights would be the icing on the cake. Pretty much like this one plus the M-brakes:

The currently available full leather Merino is only available with the ivory/blue combo which does not go too well with the black exterior. I would opt for the new, all Ivory full leather with the matching headliner.

My current favorite trim is the matte bronze effect but I certainly can't rule out one of the new ones. The one shown in the picture looks VERY interesting, too.

Of course, better lease-terms, new features and bug-fixes is always something to look forward to.

Not sure if it's been specifically confirmed for the X7 model, but it has been confirmed for the 2020 M550i and X5 M50i (523hp in both).

It's the same engine as the current M850i, and it's as close to "confirmed" as you can get without an official statement (unless I"m out of date that it's already been announced, but I doubt it).

As an early adopter, the one and only thing I missed out on and care about would be the M engine. In reality, the 460hp is already more than necessary, but I’m always a sucker for more HP...

Yes, the new 50i engine is definitely confirmed for BMW in MY2020.

Which specific models it's coming to, has yet to be confirmed. As usmabmass says, I think it's been confirmed for some models, but I couldn't tell you yet which ones are for sure, and which ones aren't.

But ask yourself this--BMW has created a new flagship SAV. Do you see BMW not putting their newest, strongest 50i engine in their new flagship X7?

Time will prove for sure.

Blue #1 reason to wait is the GLS. You value comfort and I expect accommodations to trump the X7. Not Benz’s first trip to the rodeo and we’ve seen how much 2nd row legroom the GLE got.

Question is do you prefer this gen interior Benz vs BMW? For me it’s X5 over GLE all day so I’m doubling down and trading GL for X7 with no hesitation. I won’t lament having a few inches less of legroom, but if my kids were older bet ur a## I would have held off to see GLS.

The last question is value. I think BMW wins handily when you look at what 73k gets you in the x5 vs GLE. Will what you can get for 95 msrp X7 vs gls be a win? We’ll see

Why I am not waiting for 2020.
1st my current car is on it’s last leg it’s a lemon. I have a 2015.5 Escalade best to get rid of it now before they debut the 2020 model and the value drops.

2nd nice to be the 1st around town with a newly released 1st model year vehicle. This can be seen as novelty also having the 1st model year of an all new vehicle.

The downside as stated above is there may be some 1st model year bugs to be worked out but I am banking on BMW applying learnings from the ,very similar, X5 that was released 5 months earlier to help mitigate some of the bugs.

I lost around $8K on my 15-Month-old 2018 Q7 when trading it in with the 2019 X7 (the amount maybe different depending on what is being traded in). If MY2020 X7 is going to be way special, I might give MY2019 another early trade in and get MY2020.

It's easier to do it when there is no financing/lease or lien on your car. Just divide the loss amount with the # of months you had the car and that probably would be less than the amount you would be paying if you had it on financing/lease.

It also plays a role what the MSRP of your vehicle is. The more options you have, the more $$ you will lose.

My 2017 Q7 has a sticker of $88K and trading that vehicle in after a year would have cost me a fortune. I'm leasing so getting out of the contract early would be super expensive anyway.

Due to its high MSRP, it's getting better: Even at the end of my lease, I would be about $10K upside down if I would buy it at the contractual purchase price - even when considering that I used less than 10K miles in total of the 30K allowed.

One of the reasons why I'm looking at the X7 are better lease terms in general. With BMW, I can get a $105K-vehicle for about $1,250/month. Not bad considering my $88K Q7 is $1,345/month.

Audi's MF is just shameful..

I've had several first model year vehicles with no bugs. Besides, I never owned a German car that didn't have a few bugs and nuances. No biggie.

For those curious about the future of the X7, follow this thread:
https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686

From that, unconfirmed reports are:

MY 2020 - xDrive M50i (new N63TÜ3 engine, 530hp, replacing xDrive50i)

MY 2023 - X7 LCI

MY 2025 - End of G07 production (7/25), if BMW continued the X7, would be a new model for MY2026

On a semi-related note, see under "November 2018" news, that "G09 X8 exists outside car journos' dreams". I'd love an X8.

Some of you guys remind me of the power-hungry AMG guys on the MBWorld forum. Just gotta have a powerful engine with a loud exhaust. For me, I just don't see the connection between a plush 7-passenger people mover and a loud, powerful engine. Our i50 engine is a bit to loud for me. I would have opted for the 40i if it weren't for the great deal they made us on the 50i. That being said, we were out for a drive last evening and I had to push pash a line of traffic in the passing lane and that 50i really moves the X7 when you need the power. A very good friend of ours is an AMG nut and loves the sound of our X7. I guess it comes down to this, if you earn the money and want a beast of an X7, who am I to say anything. To each his own.

For some of us, it's the closest thing we can get to a sports car for regular driving. I'd love to get something like an X6M or the like, but with three small kids (and all the stuff that comes with them everywhere, and sometimes having to carpool friends etc.), it just wasn't happening.

I get it, the X7 does handle better than our Mercedes did and it does tend to bring out the Steve McQueen in me at times. For younger owners who don't get my reference, look him up. 😂

Probably not until July, or late June at the earliest. Production won't start until August. I would think MY2020 order guides will be out by then too.

My dealer actually told me they don't expect their first 2020 allocation until probably the 2nd week of July.
