Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection on US Site

It looks like the Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection is now available on the US site. Does anyone have feedback on the value this feature adds?

Speaking of which, anyone know if the BMW’s night vision system also has animal detection like Audi’s night vision system?

For me, having animal detection to give me extra awareness of deer and other fauna while driving at night especially through back roads and less urban settings, is the only way the $2300 option would be worth it. I mean, who cares about pedestrians anyway?!

(the latter is a joke btw, but I’m serious about animal detection)

I'm pretty sure it has animal detection as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think BMW's recent Night Vision systems all have this feature.

It does have animal detection.

I had it on my F10 and it saved my bacon, unfortunately the Audi traveling with me didn’t see the deer and struck it.

I ordered my G30 with it and it has alerted me to deer on the side of the road that I probably wouldn’t have noticed.

If you live in northern latitudes where there are long winter nights and have a deer population then I think it’s good insurance.

While I have Zero experience of using it, it seems like a good feature to save animals (and the others) while driving in the night, I would be careful when spotting one and then apply the brakes to avoid the traffic behind me following closely to avoid any sudden impact with them.

Nevertheless, it's a different story but really having this feature seems good if you drive mostly in the nights.

Yes it does.
The system is supplied by Veoneer which spun out of Autoliv last year. I wanted to order this, but did not feel like waiting for April production (mine is a feb build).

The standard camera system using mobileye also does animal and pedestrian detection , but is only spec'd to do it in daylight. The mobileye camera system also activates emergency braking.

The night vision system , uses infrared and detects the heat from people and animals and is a warning system that does not activate emergency braking.

In the future Cars will have Lidar (bmw Will intro in 2021), radar, infrared and cameras.

It's a great safety feature, especially driving at night through the burbs, detecting deer, animals, etc.

That explains why I had not seen this option discussed sooner. I built and ordered my X7 on 4/1 and saw the option. I panicked a bit as I didn’t know too much about it and real world worthyness. Im told it’s generally effective, but can get some misses in hot weather (80 and up). I added it for $2300. 1 deer collision avoided (Or god forbid a person) and it more than pays for itself.

I understand it shows on the screen or even the HUD if you have it. I’m looking forward to resting it out.

In 6 years of using BMW's night vision option, I haven't experienced any more false positives during hot weather than during cold weather. Rain has a tendency to turn everything 'black' since the heat signatures are awash in cold water. As long as it's not raining, the system works really well.

Some interesting anomalies (features?) that I've noticed are:
  • Our local transit busses have an exhaust that runs up the inside of the rear of the bus which seems to trick the pedestrian detection and I've gotten acute pedestrian alerts which scared the $h*t out of me.
  • I initially thought I was getting lots of false hits until I realized many of them where animals standing behind bushes or otherwise hidden from normal view.
  • Bicyclists are sometimes reported as animals
  • Two or more people can sometimes trigger animal alerts (four legs?)
  • The camera view will show the heat signature from transformers and recently parked cars

Thanks for sharing - what about false negatives in warm weather. (Ie deer and trees same temp)

Have honestly not noticed more false negatives in warm weather. The ambient temp of vegetation is cooler than the body temp of an animal and person so there is enough contrast in warm weather too.

Have not ordered the Night Vision for two of my Xs, as was not too sure how effective this option would be and though head beams are good enough.

However, now got a loaner with this option included.

Very effective, if sees animals close to the road (or pedestrians on the road) shows the corresponding sign on HUD, gives a sound notice and „fires" at the animal twice with narrow high beam light. Having the video on the central screen not very convenient, but the system works on the background.

Still having it on the central screen can be useful, especially in wet conditions, with lots of reflections, including in a town.

Started to regret that i did not order NV myself

Does it do that "firing" stuff for the vehicle on the U.S.?

No. I am not sure if it can be coded but it does not flicker for US/NAR vehicles and not sure if it is equipped with the spot light.

On the F15 and F85 EUR/ROW vehicles the fog light was replaced with the ellipsoid projector for the spotlight featured below. I assume the laser or the cornering light could function as the spotlight so coding may be possible but I am only speculating.

Sorry to hear.

in my case (in Europe), for it to flash, an animal needs to be very close to the road, otherwise the system just shows an icon on HUD.

Pedestrians need to be on the road in front of the car for any signal / high beam flash.

Otherwise, if pedestrians are on sidewalks, the systems has no reaction at all (but shows them on the screen if they are in the field of view, of course).

Yep, it is very practical and works well for both the driver and to alert the individuals or animals in the road.

I had NV in my F15 and i was so happy about how it works that i bought it for my G07 as well. My dissapoinment was immeasurable when, after i specificaly asked dealer about "death" beams, i got my car and found G07 actually uses only laser segments which isn't narrow enough to be that well noticible as from F15's "fog lights". (and the image itself was way worse, but thankfully that was fixed after software update)
And yes, as somebody mentioned above, it looks like it has narrower range of where it can fire the beams.

I'm impressed by how BMW is still unable to move the image from NV to more convenient driver's display even after so many years. Central display is pretty distracting, not gonna lie.

Is that how it should work for G07? Because i had an event where F15 basically saved my ass thanks to emergency braking after it spotted animal in a bush.

Wish BMW hadn't got rid of this option in MY2021. (sigh)

NV combined with Laser lights and all the other safety options really gives you every tool in the tool box you could ask for. It’s one of those premium options once you experience it you will always want it.
